Beautiful Katamari

US box art for Katamari Damacy
Beautiful Katamari - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's surprising how many video games are based on violent action. This game, and the one that proceeded it, are too much fun and very benign. It seems everyone can have fun with it, including Liam and his mommy! read on about the bizarre game play:

The game's plot concerns a diminutive prince on a mission to rebuild the stars, constellations and Moon, which his father, the King of All Cosmos, has accidentally destroyed. This is achieved by rolling a magical, highly adhesive ball called a katamari around various locations, collecting increasingly larger objects, ranging from thumbtacks to schoolchildren to mountains, until the ball has grown large enough to become a star. The game falls under both the puzzle and action game

genres, since strategy as well as dexterity are needed to complete a mission, but the game is fundamentally peaceful and somewhat meditative.

Katamari Damacy's story, characters, and settings are bizarre and heavily stylized, rarely attempting any semblance of realism, though the brands and items used are based on those current in Japan during the game's production.

Far Out Son of Lung

Going through some of my remaining VHS tapes, I stumbled upon this collection I bought, somewhere. While I still find the music amazing, the video seems pretty dated now and screams "early 90's rave" So close your eyes and enjoy The (still) Future Sound of London

On my book shelf

I was filling up thebook case in the basement and got thining about what kind of portrait someone gets from looking at your books. Music is the same way. I always look at the selection to inform myself. So I decided to try the same thing online. Flickr allows you to comment on parts of the image.Follow the links and then mouse over the shots to see my notes.

TOXIC Garbage Island VBS.TV

TOXIC  - Garbage Island - Part 10 of 12 - VBS.TV

In honour of Earth Day I offer this link to part of a series of videos.

All the plastic, EVER MADE, is still here. It hasn't broken down, back into original elements, it's simple broken down itno smaller and smaller pieces, and is effecting our food chain at the microscopic level.

Three"kids" travel with researchers to the middle of the Pacific to document how all the plastic in the world eventually breaks down into tiny particulates.

After weeks of sailing, into the middle of the Pacific, some places they dredge the water and find way more plastics that plankton or any other life.

The urban myth was that there was a huge pile of garbage all whirlpooled up, the size of Texas, what they realize is that it would be way easier if that was the case!
Like a lot of environmental issues, there is no "money shot" that one image to scare the crap out of people.

Happy Earth Day!

10 years already?! wow,.. thats amazing. Still the beachmark I measure any of their work against, I played this one constantly back in ,...um I guess it was 98-99. I might pick this one up for the unified package, which brings everything together. The video for All I Need is amazing as it kinda encapsulates the whole vibe of the album, and is SO WELL DONE! I don't know if it's a doc or imporv'ed or what but I just love it.

PDNPulse: Camcorders that think like cameras: Q&A with Ted from RED

EpicPhotoDistrictNews has a few article covering the RED announcements. They are taking this stuff as serious as I am. Here's a couple snippets

RED announced three new products yesterday, the 5K Epic, the 3K Scarlet and Red Ray. Can you point out features that you think photographers would be most interested in?

Ted: I talk very publicly and very bluntly about what our camera is, and it is essentially, a digital still camera that can shoot video. It doesn't think like a video camera at all. It shoots RAW like a digital still camera and it can compress that RAW using a very advanced hardware compression engine that turns that still RAW into something that can be recorded at a very high frame rate on a compact flash card. And every [camera we make] does that.

When RED One was released last year with the ability to pull high-resolution still images from video footage, it caused a buzz in the photo community about the potential death of the decisive moment. Is RED's encroachment of the still image market an intentional one?

Ted: No, not at all. We're huge fans of the still world. We just see this as pieces of the puzzle evolving, as the convergence of the two worlds. We have the highest level of respect for what digital still cameras have done in the market. In fact, we've paid a lot of attention to that in terms of what we've done because we believe that we're on the same path. When you see things projected from our RED One camera in 4K and how far we can go with a similar type of sensor and a similar type of logic, this RAW-processing logic, but applying it to slightly different toolsets that are used for motion instead of stills, it's all the same stuff. You're just using it slightly differently.

We've talked to National Geographic and Discover and guys shooting with video and digital still at the same time, and they're asking, "Can we shoot with just one camera and potentially pull stills for our magazine?" The answer is, absolutely.

You've seen our jackets before, at the Antarctic research stations, on top of Mount Everest, in movies like National Treasure with Nicholas Cage, The Day After Tomorrow with Dennis Quaid and Disney's Eight Below. Our parkas are recognized to be the warmest on earth and now we have focused our expertise on creating the world's first "3 in 1" Photographer's Jacket.

The Real Internet Finally Made Mobile

Nokia N810 WiMAX Edition - The Real Internet Finally Made Mobile

Contrary to my instant love affair for the iPod Touch, I offer this link, to the extended commercial about the upcoming WIMAX version of Nokia's N810. The thing I notice in this very well done video is how they portray this "ipod genneration". The expectations of connectivity, the mention of being private and yet public at the same time, the talk about sharing "My music, my photos,..." and having it all with you everywhere. Granted this level of access can only be achieved in somewhere like San Fran,... but give it time. Everyone under 30 will want this kind of thing.

A.J. Jacobs - The Year of Living Biblically
AJ Jacobs was on CBC radio this AM about another piece he's written, "My Outsourced Life" where he tries to outsource all the tasks he can off shore! It was quite humorous and enlightening. Outsourcing is becoming more and more viable for all sorts of tasks and AJ tries to prove you can use it for anything!

He's been on CBC before promoting his latest book, where he tries to live a year while following the bible by the letter. Sounds like a fun read! I think I will pick this one up!

All Touchy Feely

DSC_7362.JPG DSC_7363.JPG DSC_7365.JPG

Well I finally broke down. I bought the basic 8gig iPod Touch. I just had to see what all the fuss is about. Yes I know I was at Macworld when the iPhone was first released and the Ipod Touch the following year, and yes I got to play with these toys before anyone else. But there is something about owning one, loading it up with the media you know (and love) and seeing and playing with that can't be beat!
It won't replace the 60gig ipod full of music I already own, but it will showcase recent work, videos, and some music and do it ALL beautifully!
Yes, all the raves about UI are justified. It's just so damn intuitive. Case in point, I showed Liam his photo, swiped to the next frame, and he was off doing it himself. Now if a 3 yr old can grasp the concept after being shown ONCE, you're onto something! It's after a few hours with the device, you really appreciate how well thought out the entire UI experience is. IMHO, having it tied tightly to iTunes helps in this regard. One spot to select all the different syncing or loading of media. No disk mode even!

If we're working together, just ask to play with it, I am sure you'll become hooked on it as easily as I have!

Just cuz it's there,.. doesn't mean we use it

livebooks, the makers of my website ian.ca have updated the software and have included the ability to put music on the website. At first I thought "Hey cool I love music, this will be great to share!"
then I calmed down and thought about it.

First off, I hate websites that have music, conflicts with the music I am playing, so why do it to someone else?
Secondly, the copyright issue. I can't just use any old music, and not pay for it, that would be like someone just right clicking one of my photos and using it somewhere and that wouldn't be nice.

I looked around and found another post by a web designer talking about how to convince clients they don't need music. So crank your own itunes or ipod and read this

Video on Flickr!

Flickr now supports video. Albiet it's only for 90 seconds at a time. So it's not the next Youtube.... and you ask why...
90 seconds? While this might seem like an arbitrary limit, we thought long and hard about how video would complement the flickrverse. If you’ve memorized the Community Guidelines, you know that Flickr is all about sharing photos that you yourself have taken. Video will be no different and so what quickly bubbled up was the idea of “long photos,” of capturing slices of life to share.
