Show Studio Live

Once again Nick Knight is webcasting his photo shoot with Naomi Campbell. Just like any other shoot, it's a flurry of activity interpurted by several long stretches of waiting for hair and makeup! Neat to watch him and his assistants roll around the 8X10 and shoot film. Each shot is taken on an 8X10 piece of film. The rez is unrivalled.

DV Guru: Gates says TV gone in 5 years

At the World Economic Forum on Saturday, Bill Gates forecast the demise of television in five years with the increasing popularity and greater flexibility of online video. "I'm stunned how people aren't seeing that with TV, in five years from now, people will laugh at what we've had.." While not exactly an earth-shattering prediction, it is still brave to suggest that TV will be irrelevant. While there is certainly something of a benefit to be had in being able to choose viewing content on the internet, there is still a gap to be bridged between traditional television and online video. In addition to this, online content needs to mature before it can "take over" television, and Download Squad makes a good point in saying that a "convergence device" (read: something like the Apple TV) will be needed to really merge internet video and TV. But then again, there is also the issue of bandwidth. So, maybe it's not that simple... what do you think? What will become of television over the next five years?

Brits pillage stuck container ship

Ignoring health warnings and threats of prosecution, hundreds of people foraged among containers washed from a stricken cargo vessel on the southern English coast on Monday, hauling off booty that included BMW motorcycles, shoes, diapers, beauty cream and carpets.

The scavengers descended on beaches at Branscombe after rescue tugs towed the 62,000-ton cargo vessel, the Napoli, to a sandbar just offshore to prevent it from breaking up at sea and spilling thousands of tons of oil and cargo. The cargo includes hazardous chemicals.

Television footage showed people inside shipping containers or carrying away items such as gearboxes, steering wheels and Bibles. Local people were seen using gurneys to carry away their haul. The police said 15 new BMW motorcycles were taken away, one of them by people using a small tractor as

Cult of Mac speculation on iPhone

For those who aren't that geeky, let me explain. The real geeks were dissapointed that you won't be able to just load any old program on these new iPhones. This artilce makes the point that with Web 2.0, who cares! I have to agree. As I use more and more Web 2.0 apps as long as  I have a broswer, I am happy, regardless of platform.

Googledocs

In the rush to file my column on Tuesday about iPhone lockdown and why Apple won't open up to non-Apple software, I forgot to mention the most interesting thing: what does it matter, when users can run third-party software as web apps?
Instead of making software to be installed on the iPhone, like on a computer, developers could turn their wares into web apps and put them on the web, in the data cloud.
Take Google's online word processor and spreadsheet: surely these will be just as accessible to iPhone users as Google Maps? Why install Microsoft Word when you have Google Docs available anywhere, anytime.
Maybe Google has a whole bunch of web apps for the iPhone and future smartphones like it -- take that Microsoft! Is this what Eric Schmidt was talking about when he joined Steve Jobs onstage at Macworld and talked about a Google/Apple "merger."The iPhone would use Apple's OS locally, when it is acting as an iPod, and the much-anticipated Google's OS (or GooOS when online.Of course, there may be problems with latency and delay.
Web apps are never be as snappy as their desktop equivalents. And many people don't like the idea of storing spreadsheets or first novels online. But maybe the iPhone could turn out to be a hybrid, dual-OS device?

Ziyi Zhang sightings start NOW!!

The Coming Wave of Made-in-Manitoba MoviesWith the Sundance Film Festival ongoing and the Oscar nominations announced Tuesday, everyone is talking movies. Why should we be different?
Early last week (on the coldest days of the winter so far, wouldn't you know it) the advance team from the independent thriller The Horsemen was expected in town to do the prep work before shooting starts at the end of the month.

Director Jonas Akerlund has to brave the wind chill in Winnipeg for two and a half weeks before the stars arrive, Dennis Quaid and Ziyi Zhang. Well, you knew it was a dangerous job when you took it.

The one saving feature is that the movie is sure at least to break even.Ziyi Zhang--- yes, she of Hidden Tiger Hidden Dragon, Flying Daggers, and Memoirs of a Geisha---is such a star in the East that she'll carry the flick by her lonesome over there.

Zhang, it's said, plays Kristin, "a dangerous and manipulative young teenager" who forms a small gang with four boys to avenge the victims of injustice. Dennis Quaid plays "a bitter and hardened detective", still grieving his dead wife, who discovers a shocking connection between himself, the suspects of a series of murders and, believe it or not, the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Some have described the movie as in the same vein as "Se7en". Ziyi has said its more like "Silence of the Lambs".

CrashPlan

Crashplan

CrashPlan

While video interviewing people at Macworld, I can't say real claim to take in all the information. Too busy worrying about compositions, wondering if I might have to whip the camera around to train it on Kev as he cracks a funny one, I really don't HEAR what the interviewees are saying.

So last night when I watched the Crashplan spokesperson explain what Crashplan IS, a lightbulb went off over my head. " Hey that's brilliant!"

A small app that running in the background, you desinate what you back up and where. The ideal situation is you and a friend or your work machine and home machine trade back ups. Swap USB drives and aim back ups at each others machines. Mac Win or Linux cross compatible. It all happens inthe background atuomatically, when you want it.

They even offer an off site solution but in their FAQ they try and talk you out of it:

Why shouldn't I backup to CrashPlan Central?

There are three good reasons you shouldn't backup to an on-line backup provider like CrashPlan Central:

  • A typical machine can hold 150GB of data these days. From a typical home ISP, it can take 12 days to get all your data back! During those 12 days, you can forget about using your Internet connection or PC. Did we mention it'll take 2 months for your data to get backed up in the first place?
  • We're going to charge you $15/month to store that data. That's $180/year! You can buy a USB drive for less than that.
  • Let's face it: even though our data center is in a bank vault, you still don't know where your data really is, do you? You can't point to it and say, "that's my backup."

So if you don't have a lot of data, you've some spare Lincoln lying around, and you're ok with your data being stored in a vault in Minnesota, CrashPlan Central is the destination for you!

Rodgers to carry iPhone? Maybe, who knows, who cares

Follow the link to reader the comments. Basically everyone in Canada hates their cell phone carrier, and or another one they used to be with. Compared with Europe Asia and even the US, the market here is dreadfull. Some more competition is needed to really drive this thing. Operating a "smart phone" in this country is far too expensive.

From Infinite Loop...

Rogers to carry iPhone in Canada? Maybe, but...This week must be the week of post-Macworld rumors. The most recent iPhone-related theory is that Rogers Wireless will be the carrier for the iPhone in our northern neighbor of Canada. The rumors have been sort of loosely floating around for a while now, especially considering that Rogers is currently the only GSM carrier in Canada. One potential iPhone lover started pestering Rogers Wireless himself about whether or not they'd be carrying the iPhone, and got a response from the company.

You were wondering about iPhone..Lots of speculation out there. Beyond the fact that Rogers is the only GSM carrier in Canada, we have not issued any statements as to whether or when the iPhone would be available at Rogers.

Of course, this is a typical corporate response to a question that they cannot legally answer yet, but the whole "we're the only GSM carrier in Canada" thing does indicate that they're aware of their position in the market, in that respect. This would kind of make them a shoe-in for the iPhone, unless Apple decides to release another version of the iPhone before they launch in Canada.

Considering that Apple will have to do so for some other international markets (such as, say, Asia), it's not outside the realm of possibility that the iPhone will no longer be GSM-only by that time.

Okay, for you "no double negatives!" types, that translates to: By that time, the iPhone could be available as CDMA, or even something else. So basically, no one has any idea of whether this rumor has any weight or not. But for now, Canadians can sleep easily thinking that maybe, perhaps, possibly Rogers will be the carrier for the iPhone. For now.

The Only Art on the Moon

moonart.jpg

The only piece of art on the moon (depending, we suppose, on one’s definition of art) is a 3″-tall aluminum sculpture titled “Fallen Astronaut.” It was created by Belgian artist Paul Van Hoeydonck and installed by Apollo 15 astronaut David Scott, along with a plaque bearing the names of the 14 astronauts and cosmonauts who died in the service of space exploration.

In 1972, against the crew and NASA’s wishes, Van Hoeydonck created 950 signed replicas of “Fallen Astronaut” and sold them for $750 a piece.

Are photographers cool again?

With PBS's recent American Masters profile of Annie Lebowitz, and the Documentary channel's showing of two docs this month about photographers, Sally Mann and Robert Capra,(pictured below)are photographers cool again? Could it be now that everyone who wants a camera, has one, people have started to discover it's not the gear but the people behind it that make the images that last? Oh I hope so.

Ten years after directing the Academy Award nominated Blood Ties, director Steven Cantor revisits renowned photographer Sally Mann and her family, the subjects of her controversial photographic series.

Never one to compromise, Sally Mann reflects on her own personal feelings towards death as she continues to examine the boundaries of contemporary photography. Her willingness to reveal her artistic process as it unfolds allows the viewer to gain exclusive entrance into her world.

Robert Capa, the world’s preeminent documentarian of 20th century war, photographed five epic conflicts on three different continents. A handsome, dashing figure, Capa was a life-long pacifist who wore military uniforms, rode in tanks, jumped out of planes, dodged bullets and marched in the front lines. His images have affected the lives of those who may not even know his name. The only photographer who touched land with soldiers at Omaha Beach on D-Day, his shocking pictures inspired Steven Spielberg’s Saving Private Ryan more than 50 years later.

Pocket Mod

Kev demo'ed this one on his spot on the new show Living Winnipeg. Low tech PDA solution.

The PocketMod is a new way to keep yourself organized. Lets face it, PDAs are too expensive and cumbersome, and organizers are bulky and hard to carry around. Nothing beats a folded up piece of paper. That is until now. With the PocketMod, you can carry around the days notes, keep them organized in any way you wish, then easily transfer the notes to your PDA, spreadsheet, or planner.

The PocketMod is a small book with guides on each page. These guides or templates, combined with a unique folding style, enable a normal piece of paper to become the ultimate note card. It is hard to describe just how incredibly useful the PocketMod is. It's best that you just dive in and create one.

Spam email

If you were wondering how things are going in my industry, take a look at this site, which came to me in a spam email. This is who I am competing with. Brian Moore, you must die! :-)

Hello, my name is Brian Moore and I’ve been making money online using the power of my digital camera for over two years now and I’m here today to tell you that to start earning money with your digital camera you don’t need any special training, diplomas or aptitude. You don’t even need any photography experience at all.All you do need is a digital camera and access to the Internet. That's it!If you have those two things, you can begin to make REAL money online today (either part-time or full-time, it’s up to you)! Well I guess you do need just one other thing...a real mailing address so you can receive your paychecks in the mail...but that's it!

In all honesty, it's the best way of making money I've ever come across. In fact, it is so good, I was able to leave my high-paying corporate job and now make my living taking digital photos and submitting them onto the internet. It’s a career that allows me: * To take vacations to wherever I want, whenever I want, for as long as I want! * To have total job security! * To determine how much money I want to make instead of relying on a boss! * To decide what my work hours are. If I want to knock off early one day, it’s my decision! * To finally escape the competitiveness, the backstabbing and the long hours of the rat race! * To spend much more time with my family! * To live the wealthy lifestyle that I’ve always dreamed of! It really is great! I wouldn't even call what I do a business. Digital photography is actually fun to do and even more fun when you see all that money being deposited into your account day by day.

Arvo Part: Kanon Pokajanen

years ago Avro Part's Te Deum was, for a moment, the trendy choral album you just HAD to own. It was about the same time Enigma was putting dance beats to Gregorian chant.(seems so quaint now doesn't it?) Anyway I pulled out Te Deum the other day and it left me wanting more. The raves for this album, the Kanon Pokajanen, were plentiful, so I thought I'd try it. It's a wonderful recording that illustrates the sheer power of the human voice. If you've often wondered if you'd enjoy liturgical music, and I mean who doesn't at some point, then this is a good place to start!

33 1/3 books

The 33 1/3 series are smallish little books written about one album. Thats right, one book about one album. What a concept! The list of titles is pretty diverse The one I bought was for The Stone Roses, one of my desert island albums. I haven't finished it yet but so far so good. I am waiting for the one about My Bloody Valentine's Loveless. With the "iPod age of music upon us, these little books kind of remind us of a time when a collection of songs by one artist, listened to pretty much at the same time, had an effect on us.

Nasa lost the tapes

A heart breaking article in this month's wired about the image quality of the broadcast of the first moon landing.
Not long ago, Lebar learned why the footage had looked like mush: The transfer and broadcast had degraded the image badly, like a third-generation photocopy. "What the world saw was some bastardized thing," says Lebar, now 81. "Posterity deserves more than that." Good thing the engineers in Australia recorded the raw feed. Now Lebar and a crew of seasoned space cowboys are trying to get that original footage and show it to the world.

There is just one problem: NASA has lost the tapes.

The iPod, and soon the iPhone will further this and make MACworld probably consider a name change soon, just like Apple took the word Computer offically out of their name. AppleWorld? Eworld? iWorld?
