Konfabulator's Creator Responds to Dashboard; Watson's Technology Purchased

(Can you say "rip off"? Apple should be kinda ashamed of this.)

28 June 2004 16:44 EST
Peter Kirn, Associate Editor

The PowerPage was among the first to report the release of Arlo Rose's Konfabulator utility, to which Apple's newly-announced Dashboard bears more than a passing resemblance. In a nod to Apple's 'Redmond, start your copiers,' the Konfabulator site currently takes a jab at Cupertino for stealing ideas from third parties. Why should you care? If you haven't tried Konfabulator lately, aside from saving you the wait until 2005 for OS X 10.4, there are currently 650 user widgets available for download, including widgets identical to most of the widgets demonstrated in Apple's Dashboard.

The story sounds a lot like the Watson / Sherlock controversy, which arose when Apple cloned Karelia's excellent Watson utility. And in more News of the Strange for third party utilities, that technology has apparently been purchased, possibly by Sun: read the FAQ on Karelia's site. (More details as they become available)

My take: imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but my plan is to run Konfabulator alongside OS X 10.4's more unique (non-copied) features.

Here's the full open letter from Arlo Rose, as sent to me and other press outlets:

While Redmond is stealing ideas from Cupertino, it seems Cupertino is stealing ideas from its third party developers. Konfabulator, the first utility to allow users skinable easy to create desk accessory-like objects written in JavaScript, has served as the template for Apple's new feature Dashboard. As a result, we'd like let the Mac OS X community know that if they'd like to get their hands on Dashboard now rather than wait 'till 'the first half of 2005' they can.

Simply go to http://www.konfabulator.com, and download a copy of Konfabulator today to see what the fuss is all about!

Konfabulator is a $25 application that allows for the use of files called Widgets. Widgets are built with a combination of XML, JavaScript, can include AppleScript and Unix calls, and can look and do whatever you want them to.

Want more than the default Widgets? Visit the Widget Gallery with over 650 user contributed Widgets that range from amazingly addictive games, to incredibly useful utilities.

Michael Moore.com : Mike's Message : Mike's Latest News

what I thought would be a quiet guilty pleasure on the first really nice Sunday in along time, ended up being a sold out matinee at Grant Park. I emerged to find the line forming for the next showThe film is everything everyone says it is: Brilliant, personal, biased, compelling. The thing I found was the real emotional wallops came from scenes that would move anyone, regardless of political persuasion. This is the most important political documentary of the year. Though I can't name another one in wide theatrical release right now!

Michael Moore.com : Mike's Message : Mike's Latest NewsThe View From America: Responses to Fahrenheit 9/11

"It is six in the morning and the emails are still pouring in. From every town and every state the story is the same. Massive lines, sold out shows, standing ovations. We have done our best to compile these reports from across the country, broken down by state, to share these reactions. There will be photographs from many of these same towns posted tomorrow. Despite the length of this list, it is but a small sampling of the responses you have been sending in and we cannot thank you enough for your kind words. If you are looking for something to do right now, you can always register to vote."

XML.com: What is RSS?

People often ask how I can find so many cool links or stories or whatever, off the web. The answer is I use RSS. Follow the link to get the geeky story, but for most news or blog type sties you'll see a little RSS/XML link. That's the link you "subscribe" to in your RSS reader, a separate app. Then as the site gets updated the headlines, and sometimes the copy of an entry shows up in the reader, an easy link to your browser to follow it, if you desire, is available. You can scan hundreds of websites in a glance. I use NetNewsWire Lite a free app for OS X. There are several to choose from.

iChat AV at 35,000 Feet

I am sorry but this is too cool! I don't care if you're a geek or not, you gotta admit this would be a great way to pass the time on a plane!

It’s a long flight from Munich to San Francisco, even non-stop. But recently two enterprising Apple product managers cut the distance dramatically with a few at-hand tools: iChat AV, iSight, 17-inch PowerBook G4, an Airbus and an orbiting satellite.

In what might have been the first in-air commercial videoconference, Apple product manager Kurt Knight, on the ground in Cupertino, hooked up over iChat AV with product line manager Eric Zelenka, returning to San Francisco from Munich, by leveraging Lufthansa’s new wireless high-speed broadband connection service.

“Eric broadcast his availability for video chat with the custom status message ‘Wireless at 35K Feet!’” says Knight.

Although the wireless Internet connection involved sending data from an Airbus traveling at 500 mph through a satellite receiver in a 20,000-mile earth orbit, conferencing with Zelenka was as easy as clicking his video status button.

Knight got an early report on the trip — as well as a free look out the window — and Zelenka found a productive and engaging way to pass the time on a 12-hour flight.

“The video quality was great and scaled well all the way up to full screen,” says Knight. “I think we made history as the first people to have an in-air video conference, not counting Air Force One or other ultra-expensive solutions. Very, very cool."

VANOC logo contest

the GDC having issue with the logo competition for the Van Oly Games. Spec work, not good.

"“This is demeaning to the profession. A logo is part of an integrated marketing and branding strategy—not a piece of art that you can stick on everything. You can’t treat graphic design and logo creation as an art contest. This is like a cattle call. It’s not sound business practice and it’s asking designers to waste of thousands of hours and dollars on a lottery.”

The New York Times > Science > Side Effects: No Skeeters, No Problem? Not So Fast

Something for Mayor Sam to read. The guy who claimed he was gonna rid us of the pest...

"In any case, the reality, said Dr. Willott, is that 'we're not going to get rid of the mosquitoes.' It's just impossible, particularly if we want to use methods that don't kill off everything else. DDT is very effective at mosquito control, but it can be disastrous for birds of prey.

When I asked Dr. Willott if she thought it was immoral to try to make a species go extinct, assuming you could do it without hurting other organisms, she thought the question was significant enough to require a formal statement. 'Striving for the unachievable is not an appropriate use of resources,' she said. 'If one acknowledges that eradication is highly unlikely to work or might have serious side effects, the moral thing to do would be to find another way.' In other words, don't be stupid."

"I am too old for this bull shit" ME TOO

From: Chase, Steven (With the NDP)
Sent: Monday, June 21, 2004 9:53 AM
Subject: Bandwagon empty...

Oshawa, Ont. -- Everybody loves a parade, but few watching the Fiesta Week procession in Oshawa Sunday appeared in the mood for politicians of any stripe.

There were smatterings of applause for NDP leader Jack Layton, his wife Olivia Chow and local candidate Sid Ryan as they rode in the one-hour parade.

But there were also awkward moments of silence where Mr. Layton's car drove by people who may as well have been asleep - or watching a funeral procession.

Conservative candidate Colin Carrie, following in a separate car, didn't fare any better.

Onlookers seemed more keen on floats such as the Caribbean dance band -- which played a steel drum version of ABBA's Dancing Queen endlessly -- than the candidates.

While one man heckled Mr. Layton -- suggesting he was a loser -- most disgruntled onlookers simply muttered cynical comments to their friends.

'It's about time to give another guy a chance to rip you off,' one parade watcher said.

Griped another: 'You see them once a year and then they vanish.'

One eldery man watching the procession said he had no opinion on Mr. Layton or the election.

'I'm 80 years old and I'm too old for this bullshit,' he said."

For the travellers in the crowd. You don't want to second guess before you get there. I found in Hungary, the plugs are recessed so my adapter didn't fit, I needed something to get the plug out of the recessed area. Who knew! The reporters

No wonder they are having bad coverage, you gotta keep the lack of wolves fed or they will chew you up!

"From: Chase, Steven (With the NDP)
Sent: Thursday, June 17, 2004
Subject: Zeroplan

Disgruntled reporters covering Jack Layton have a new name for the NDP: no damn points.

Both the Conservatives and New Democrats are flying on Air Canada planes, but only the Tories are granting journalists Aeroplan points for flying on the leader's plane. (Media outlets pay hefty travel bills to place reporters on these jets)

Aeroplan points are a little-known perquisite of plane travel on campaign tours that leaves lucky reporters with a bevy of free flights after the election.

But the NDP failed to secure Aeroplan points when negotiating their campaign jet hire. The omission has left journalists gnashing their teeth over the incredible point windfall they are missing. (Quietly gnashing of course so as not to appear petty and small minded in the midst of a potentially historic election campaign.)

The NDP plane racks up about 12,500 kilometres of air travel per week - a tidy sum when converted into precious Aeroplan points.

NDP officials have repeatedly answered queries from whiny journalists about Aeroplan with the phrase 'We're working on it.'

This week the cause appeared lost when the NDP spokesman's reponse changed to: 'I thought we'd moved beyond that.'

Still, there are consolations: orange and silver Jack Layton travel mugs are standard issue to all NDP campaign reporters."

Welcome To Spacecraft Films: Apollo15

I must be insane. I just bought this. This would the THIRD DVD package on the space program I have purchased. I watched the entire Apollo 11 mission. Thats the first one to land on the moon for the plebs who don't know. I watched the entire time they were doing their EVA, all 3 hours of it. I feel like I know every moment of that mission. That was 3 DVD's this next set is 6, Thats right, SIX DVD's!!! But unless you were a kid during the Apollo program, you won't understand the allure these packages have, all the footage, no stupid voice overs, no BS docu/commentary, just the raw footage. I feel like I am there. It's an amazing series of an amazing series of events in the history of mankind. For as far as we've come in technology in the last 30 years, we did manage to do amazing things in space back then.

When I want to relax, I boot this program up and twiddle with it for hours. Some days I have an ok song to show for it, other days I have nothing to show for my time. That's ok. Either way, I enjoy it, and the hours fly by. I know one thing, you really begin to appreciate and understand the hard work that goes into some music. Some other genres, the key in making something successful is knowing when to leave things alone or completely out of the track.
Eventually I'll offer up some of my tunes on here. But with little musical training, if I am able to do this, anything can. How empowering is that!?

Hands-On With the Canon EOS 1Ds

"It might seem odd, more than a year-and-a-half after its release to do a hands-on review of the Canon EOS 1Ds. After all, the popularity of the flagship Canon digital camera has garnered it much attention, and the body has found its way into the bags of countless Canon shooters, despite the still-astronomical retail price.

But that's precisely the reason why we've chosen the 1Ds as the inaugural product in our hands-on product testing column. More than a year after its release, many of Canon's chief competitors are still without a camera that directly matches the specifications of the 1Ds. In many ways the camera is the benchmark against which other cameras are judged.

My single contribution, photographically, to the electoral process. I am not even following the city stuff, the federal campaigns are much more dramatic. Though many say the choice for mayor has a more immediate impact on our day to day that any other level.

I never ever search these jobs out, usually a client gets involved in a campaign and then asks me to do it. I also don't bother trying to bill for these, cuz inevitably, if they don't win, they don't pay. If they do win, they might call for the "official" stuff. Hardly ever, but they might.

MURIEL'S WEDDING

(this was on the dish, I have seen it a few times, but forgot just how good it was.)

'Muriel's Wedding' has a lot of big and little laughs in it, but also a melancholy undercurrent, which reveals itself toward the end of the film in a series of surprises and unexpected developments. The arc of its story involves Muriel's discovery of herself, and a developing faith that she can have a good time, make friends, and be valued. The film's good heart keeps it from ever making fun of Muriel, although there are moments that must have been tempting.

And the casting of minor characters (including Muriel's sister with the naughty-naughty smirk) is flawless.

Macworld UK - 'Apple PDA ditched' – Steve Jobs

By Macworld staff
Apple CEO Steve Jobs told delegates gathered at the Wall Street Journal's D: All Things Digital conference that Apple had designed a PDA device that never made it to market.

Jobs indicated that Apple will not be venturing into the PDA business and revealed no plans for a PDA/mobile phone hybrid, despite calls for Apple to offer such a device.

According to Apple Insider, Jobs told one delegate who was holding a Treo that he should 'remain happy' with that device.

This wasn't Apple's first attempt at making a PDA. The Newton - one of the first ever PDAs – was released by Apple in August 1993. However, early models were bulky, expensive and bug-ridden, leading it to be widely ridiculed. Apple killed Newton in February 1998 even though fans demonstrated in the car park of Apple's Cupertino campus.

Jobs also used this event to re-emphasise that Apple has no plans to support Microsoft's WMA (Windows Media Audio) format, but added that should Microsoft reach 50 per cent market share in that industry, he may reconsider.

Jobs also alluded to a new product that would enable the iPod to work better in a car, and hinted that Apple is working at reducing the iPod's price.

He also confirmed that the European launch of iTunes Music Store will happen on June 15.

Wired News: Little Brothers Like IP Cameras

Big Brother is getting a whole lot of little siblings. New surveillance cameras allow anyone with a broadband internet connection to keep a 24-hour watch on nearly anything from anywhere.

Want to monitor your house from the office? Connect one of the cameras to an Ethernet or wireless computer network at home, then navigate your browser to a website linked to an internet address assigned to the camera.

These internet protocol, or IP, cameras, made by companies including Cisco Systems' Linksys unit and Sweden's Axis Communications, function as stand-alone servers that stream video over the web.

In Europe alone, IP cameras are expected to account for about 20 percent of a surveillance market forecast to be worth 376.5 million euros ($460 million) in annual sales by 2008, up from less than five percent today, according to IMS Research.

'It's going to be one of the biggest trends in the surveillance market over the next few years without a doubt,' said Simon Harris, a senior IMS analyst. 'The companies that don't have good product offerings for (internet) network surveillance are going to lose market share.'

In a sign of the market's growth, the organizers of last week's Computex computer trade show in Taipei set up a security pavilion for the first time, populated by about 25 vendors.

Systems ran the range from simple configurations allowing parents to check on their children, to 16-camera networks providing multi-point remote surveillance of office buildings.

Extra bells and whistles included cameras controlled via the internet to scan a room, systems that trigger remote alarms when motion is detected, and ones whose views are accessible over cellphones and wireless personal digital assistants (PDAs).

Such systems offer the advantage of relative affordability, since they use existing broadband infrastructure. Off-the-shelf software-equipped cameras cost just $200 to $300 apiece, said vendors at Computex, most of them smaller firms. More consumer-oriented models, such as the Linksys model, can cost even less.

Broadband-based systems are also more easily integrated with related systems that regulate functions such as access control, said Jill Chu, a sales specialist with G-Star Communications.

A drawback is the complexity of setting up systems, said Jin Whan, a product engineer at 3JTech. 'The configuration is the hard part, but once you get that figured out the operation is easy,' he said at Computex.

For that reason, most of 3JTech's biggest customers so far have been specialty security companies, such as Napco Security Systems, a supplier to Tyco International's ADT Security Systems.

'Sales are picking up gradually,' Whan said. 'There's more and more people asking for IP cameras. The technology is getting more accepted because people are moving to the internet more.'"

The Globe and Mail

Some men shook hands and embraced. Others told nervous jokes. A few collected stones and piles of sand. And some stood with the water at their feet and quietly wept.

'The last time I was here, there wasn't much time to look at the scenery,' said James Patrick, who was among the first to step into the rough waters off this stretch of beach in the dawn of June 6, 1944, with the Regina Rifles. 'There was too much metal coming in my direction.' He had not been back here since that day when he stepped from the landing craft into fear and agony, and said the smell of the sea brought back terrible memories.

'One trip out here is enough for a lifetime,' said Philip Cockburn, 82, of Forest, Ont. 'Us old soldiers tend not to talk about this kind of thing,' he said, struggling to maintain his composure as he paused in his wheelchair. 'It sort of gets you in the heart. ..... There are things you can't stand to think about.'

Others mustered a show of bravado.

'Last time I was here I left a leg down there — did any of you guys happen to see a leg? Tell me if you happen to see it,' joked Bob Ross as he steered away from the shore in his wheelchair. He was wounded and endured an agonizing wait on the beach that morning.

The veterans were accompanied by a line of young Frenchwomen, offering bottles of water to overcome the heat of the day.

This provoked one former infantrymen to turn and ask: 'Where were you when I was here 60 years ago?' That earned him a kiss on the lips.

As the soldiers were left to their memories on the beach, several thousand Canadian visitors looked across the long stretch of Norman beach where 2,500 American, British and Canadian young men were killed by Germans that day. It was the beginning of a terrible fight into Germany that would kill a quarter-million Allied soldiers by the war's end in May, 1945.

'You know, it has just struck me: When I look at all the Canadians seated in the stands today, I'm looking at pretty much the number of young men who we sent to land in Normandy 60 years ago,' said Lieutenant-Colonel Ernest Côté. He was one of a tiny group of Canadians who knew about the invasion as early as January of 1944, when he helped plan it with the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. 'That really brings it home: We sent a stadium full of Canadians to face the German guns.'"
