The Stone Roses

I finally received the 20th Anniversary remastered edition of the 1989 debut by the Stone Roses. It's considered in the Uk to be one of the top album of all time, and has an almost mythic status over there. For me it's a reminder of those heady days of the late 80's, early 90's and is definitely one of my "desert island discs"
Music from the Uk was coming from all angles, in response to the grunge movement from America. I found all of it to be much more interesting than the stuff we heard on the charts here. While the one single from The Stone Roses, Fool's Gold, was more of a dance number, the majority of the album suggests 60's era pop and would go on to spur the Brit Pop movement later on in the decade. It took them 6 years to follow this one up and of course it broke the band, but this album stands the test of time. I have constantly listened to it for the last 20 years. The remastering is wonderful and has brought out details lost in the previous version.

Toronto part 2

I wanted to get to Toronto at this time of year because there were a few shows of photography I wanted to see. One at the AGO was a collection of work by Edward Steichen did while at Vanity Fair. Steichen is one of my favourite photographers of all time, who lead an amazing life. This chapter of his long career was well represented.
The other was a collection of work from Vanity Fair done by all sort of photographers through out the years up till today. This included some of my other faves, Annie Leibovitz, Mark Seliger, Helmut Newton,
As it happened there was also a show of Nigel Dickson's work, a Canadian editorial photographer.
All of the shows didn't disappoint. There will always be some about seeing images blown up big, framed, and on the wall. The Steichen show in particular, placement of the like minded images together really allowed you to see the evolution of his vision.
Now I have to get the WAG to the Karsh show!

Cory Doctorow-Makers

My current book. You can read it for free, online. I think I even knew that but bought just the same. Much easier to read offline. He gives away all his books, knowing this. His last book Little Brother was excellent!

From the New York Times bestselling author of Little Brother, a major novel of the booms, busts, and further booms in store for America
Perry and Lester invent things—seashell robots that make toast, Boogie Woogie Elmo dolls that drive cars. They also invent entirely new economic systems, like the “New Work,” a New Deal for the technological era. Barefoot bankers cross the nation, microinvesting in high-tech communal mini-startups like Perry and Lester’s. Together, they transform the country, and Andrea Fleeks, a journo-turned-blogger, is there to document it.
Then it slides into collapse. The New Work bust puts the dot.combomb to shame. Perry and Lester build a network of interactive rides in abandoned Wal-Marts across the land. As their rides, which commemorate the New Work’s glory days, gain in popularity, a rogue Disney executive grows jealous, and convinces the police that Perry and Lester’s 3D printers are being used to run off AK-47s.
Hordes of goths descend on the shantytown built by the New Workers, joining the cult. Lawsuits multiply as venture capitalists take on a new investment strategy: backing litigation against companies like Disney. Lester and Perry’s friendship falls to pieces when Lester gets the ‘fatkins’ treatment, turning him into a sybaritic gigolo.
Then things get really interesting.

Monday 23rd Edna Fedya

Next Monday on the 23rd from 5 to 6 pm I will talking about technology's impact to photography. It wasn't till I was reading Rob's post that I began to think about it being the end of the decade. Rob's focus was on the changes to the medium of music. As tumultuous as they were for music the say can be said about the medium of photography. I started this decade shooting a ton of film, we all know what happened! Anyway feel free to join me at this event. I believe it also will be broadcast on UMFM, live I think!

Testing Kit

Testing Kit, originally uploaded by www.ian.ca.

Awhile ago I alluded on Twitter that I had one of the weirdest shoots coming up. Now it can be revealed. Working with Tetro, the shoot was for Cancercare and was the photo how-to manual for the ColonRectal screening kit. This shot is probably the only shot I can show you without the risk of offending or getting my blog reflagged.

The client was looking for a way of showing how to perform the test correctly in a way that everyone could understand, regardless of age, language, etc. The designers looks at how several other jurisdictions present this information and how hard they tried to skirt the issues yet never really spelling it out in a plain way. The power of photography over cartoon illustrations is there is no way to misinterpret what you're seeing.

So for as much this shoot generated a lot of funny comments, it IS nice to be involved in something that might help save lives.

I talk about Apple Certification in Winnipeg

An interview with BT. Shot on what had to be the coldest day of the entire summer. We were shooting Warehouse One Back to school in the park. BRRRR.
