----------------

I know a few clients of mine receive the same emails I've been getting for these services based in India. (Now I am getting phone calls as well!)

I have often wondered, as I am sure others have, " Are they any good?" I finally broke down and tried one such company out (FYI not this one featured, another one called ImagesIndia) I intentionally sent a difficult image and requested that the file be saved as a Tiff with alpha mask in place for easy insertion into a page layout. They did a great job and they did it over night.

My biggest concern in dealing with services like this would be security. While its not an issue with most catalog stuff, some of my clients work in fairly competitive fields and would cringe to know the next big thing is "out there" floating around in India. But for the client who has 1000 widgets, this service could be a real time saver.

Cassettes still a multi-million dollar industry... in prison - Boing Boing Gadgets

Cassettes still a multi-million dollar industry... in prison - Boing Boing Gadgets

Cassette tapes may be dead. There may be no nostalgists who lyrically pine for the days of tape, no audiophiles who swear by the purity of the format. But tape still has its place in the world. There are perks to the obsolescent format.

For one thing, unlike CDs, the money in cassette tapes is not plummeting because of audio downloads. According to Bob Paris, owner of North Hollywood's Pack Central, a mail-order business exclusively dedicated to selling cassette tapes: . "[Five years ago], people thought I was nuts when I invested tons of money in analog prerecorded music on tape." Now? Paris' business steadily brings in a million dollars a year.

But who is buying Paris' cassettes? America's 2.3 million prisoners. Which brings us to the second advantage of tape over compact disc: a tape can't be broken apart and used as a shiv. Prisoners are allowed to have them. 60% of Paris' business is in cassette tapes.

XBMC is now Plex

XBMC is a media centre that was orginally developed to run on the first Xbox. It has a big following and is posted over to several platforms. This is the OS X version. My only wish is that would do a PowerPC version since I have a couple old PowerPC's collecting dust that would great to run this.

Plex

We’re a small, but dedicated team of individuals working on porting XBMC to OS X. Specially, we’re targeting Leopard on Intel hardware. We believe OS X provides a superior platform for the best media platform out there.

Our goal is to port the core code, and then enhance it with Mac-specific features, like Growl, Sparkle, and more.

Apple adds four design awards from BusinessWeek to its hoard

Apple adds four design awards from BusinessWeek to its hoard
BusinessWeek recently announced the winners of its yearly International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA), and Apple was bestowed four awards, including three Gold awards and one Silver. The MacBook Air, iPhone, and Wireless Keyboard all took top honors, while the aluminum iMac garnered a second place award.

I recently upgraded my 24 in iMac to the newer style, with the new keyboard. Feels fine, runs great takes up even less room.  I noticed HP has gone strong on promoting their new lineup that rips the new iMac off. Several magazines are touting the new thinner laptops as "MacBook Air Killers" and we've only just begun to see the tip of the iceberg in "iPhone killers". Apple seems to be firing on all cylinders right now. As always the big question is where do they go from here?

The Moment It Clicks: Photography secrets from one of the world's top shooters Joe McNally

Amazon.com: The Moment It Clicks: Photography secrets from one of the world's top shooters (Voices That Matter): Joe McNally: Books

I've already raved about this book to a few people, but thought I'd do it here. It's just a great read. It's got a great balance of technical and anecdotal information. It reads like you're having a beer with the guy and he's going off about each shot. McNally's enthusiasm is contagious and even someone like myself can draw some inspiration from this book. I found myself flipping through it again the other day, just before a shoot, to get me thinking a bit more about my approach to a subject. McNally was an early leader in the use of Nikon's wireless flash system, and produced the first digital story for National Geographic. You can also check out his great blog here.

Peachpit: iChat Theater, Five Mac Tips in Five Days, Part 4

(This could be the number reason to get the grandparents, spouse, long distance client, etc running Leopard!- Ian)

This is an amazing feature in iChat: You can show files, photos, slideshows, or movies while video-chatting with a friend or coworker.

During a video chat, simply drag any file, photo (or a collection of files or photos), or movie from your hard disk and drag it on top of the video chat window. You'll see two options appear in the iChat window: "Send to [Buddy]" and "Share with iChat Theater." Drop the file or files directly on top of the option you want—in this case, the iChat Theater option.

Your buddy’s image gets resized to the corner and the file or movie takes center place.

At the same time, iChat opens a file window on your screen that allows you to scroll through the same multipage document as your buddy watches, or you can play or pause the movie, or show the next or previous image in the slideshow in the chat window. All this time, you are talking to and seeing each other!

You can even share iPhoto photos or entire events: Just drag a photo, a collection of photos, or an entire Event and drop it on the iChat video window.

To share an album from iPhoto, go to the iChat File menu and choose “Share iPhoto With iChat Theater…,” then choose an iPhoto album from the window that appears. Amazing.

Jodene has flare

Flare can be your friend. Shooting INTO the sun to get that warm summery look. Careful not to look into the sun! Takes some getting used to and you'll find you're a hair's breath away from disaster. Add a dash of warm, crank the black points to get some conrtast, or don't.

  • -dubby ambient and electro stuff
  • -Indian stuff
