Creative Lube #11

There are lots of easier things to be professionally, and yet, you chose to be a creative pro. In this Creative Lube Leslie talks about some things you can do to remember why you made this choice and how it was the best thing you ever did. You'll get some wise marketing ideas in the process, and maybe a (loving) kick in the dupa.

37 Signals Backpack

Backpack information organizer and calendar

Simple software to help you get organized: 37signals

I can't recall the last time I talked about this but for those who vaugely recall, I am still using Backpack.

In fact the more I use it, the more I love it. I am using a Backpack page as my main Next Actions page. The Calendar is still my main calendar. At first I thought having things online a bit limting, but with 3-4 different machines in use, it's the ideal way of acessing my data where ever I am when the phone rings. People are working on offline solutions, but really it's more about making a small bit of effort in your behaviour rather than dealingw ith feature bloat. That seems to be 37 Signals prime objective, to get you to work more efficent while maintaining a bloat free app.

They also just released HighRise, a contact manager. While very cool, say for a sales guy, I find it a bit over the top. The contact managment is more than I need, and the creation of tasks 2 steps too many. But take a look, all these apps have smaller free accounts.

Fishing 2007

Some snaps from our trip to the Flying Fishermen fishing camp. Great camp, great bunch of guys and of course great fish. So much Pickerel, so little time. As you can see, we didn't even want the Northerns in the boat. While we had a little rain we totally missed all the heavy stuff happening everywhere else.

The final report was unveiled yesterday and I have to say I was impressed with the results. I always cringe when I finally get to see where my photos end up, afraid of a bad crop or bad printing. But Relish Design did a wonderful design and the printing by Kromar was spot on.

Set your PVRs!

I was interviewed awhile back as a "photographic expert" on the authenticity of the photography Hamilton did. I HOPE that through the wonders of editing, I might show up in this doc sounds at least coherent.

Chasing Hamilton's Ghost
"Sunday, June 24th (6:30 p.m.) repeat
In the early 20th century, Dr. Thomas Hamilton was one of Winnipeg’s most respected businessmen, and a leader in the community. But for all his contributions, today he's best known for the séances that he conducted at Hamilton House. And for the hundreds of photographs he took during those séances, which capture images of strange apparitions seemingly drawn from the other side. Or, do they? Tonight, Darren Wall looks at Hamilton's work and his photographs, and asks - what does this all mean?

This ones for my shooting friends (and some clients!) who need schooling

EP - A DIGITAL MANIFESTO

The link above goes to a explanation of  what's considered standard charges for digital services. I aint' gonna stomp on my soapbox too much about this, frankly becuase I am tried of it.

A couple years ago I really felt compelled to rally the pro photogs in this city and make sure we all knew what we should be charging. Try as we might there were always some key shooters who decided they didn't want to be the samee room as their peers, leaving everyone to wonder "Are THEY the ones who aren't charging enough?" Historically, pro photographers in this city are stand-offissh and wary of each other. I thought the changes in our industry would have changed some of these attitudes. They haven't, so I give up trying to get everyone united.

Mean while the "next gen" of shooters will simply undercharge and devalue our industry to the point where being a photographer is a quaint notion like a woodcarver. In the future we'll all be fighting over the $20 istockphoto is paying.

So if you're gonna charge money for your photography, hit the link. Please.

Whither .Mac?

By Charles Jade | Published: June 09, 2007 - 12:19PM CT

The .Mac service turns five in July and has easily become the most stunted and neglected product that Apple offers. For $99 a year ($69 if you look around), you get an anemic and tortuously slow gigabyte of storage space for your iDisk (minus what is devoted to your .Mac e-mail account) plus a few services of wildly disparate quality.  By far the best is the seamless syncing of mail, contacts, calendars, and bookmarks across multiple Macs, while easily the worst is .Mac Backup, a flagship product of the Punishment Development Group at Apple. So long-suffering .Mac users like myself should have felt an inexpressible relief at the D: All Things Digital conference when Steve Jobs was shamed in response to a question over the sorry state of .Mac.

"I couldn't agree with you more and we will make up for lost time in the very near future."

Bush And Tutu Meet On Fantasy VF Cover

Vanity Fair is famous for its blockbuster covers, and at first glance it seems to have outdone itself this month. Twenty different July covers shot by Annie Leibovitz depict major world leaders and celebrities meeting one another in support of Africa.

Among the most historic: A photo of President George W. Bush joining Archbishop Desmond Tutu for a moment of quiet reflection.

But the subjects seen together never actually posed together. Bush was photographed April 13 in Washington while Tutu was photographed April 28 in Kobe, Japan.

WHO behind the scenes

WHO Behind the scenes on Flickr - Photo Sharing!

Nothing like the smell of urine and piles of broken glass to give the shoot that gritty urban feel we're looking for!

Ron Sawchuk from McKim, Jason Brandes from Warehouse and the rest of the crew worked it hard and we managed to miss the rain.

Thanks to Dave for these behind the scenes snaps. Look for the posters in a few weeks!

50 years ago, a car was buried for the future!

If you happen find yourself in Tulsa, Oklahoma on June 15, bring a shovel. Buried beneath the dirt of the Tulsa County Courthouse lawn, about 100 feet north of the intersection of Sixth Street and Denver Avenue, a 1957 Plymouth Belvedere Sport Coupe has been hidden underground for half a century.  Swaddled in rust-resistant preservatives and gently placed inside a giant concrete sarcophagus, the tailfinned Plymouth was interred on June 15, 1957 as the centerpiece of a time capsule created for the 21st century citizens of Tulsa 2007.
