Windows Home Server

Windows Home Server

Rob and I have been talking about NAS and home media severs hitting mainstream for years. With the arrival of MS's HomeServer OS that tipping point is close at hand. All the stuff on your's and your families computers, all together in one box in the basement.

for a funny explanation on what their all about check out the tongue in cheek kids book called "Mommy what's a Home server?"  Very funny cuz it's just like the kids books I am reading these days!

CHDK for Canons

Firmware cracks for Canon P&S to enable RAW shooting and other things.

(If you didn't understand this, then best you back away slowly from the link.)

Could this be the future, Open source meets photography? one part of me says oh I hope not, but the other side of me says, if they won't make a camera to my specs, then let's hack it!

CHDK Wiki

CHDK is a firmware enhancement that operates on a number of Canon Cameras. CHDK gets loaded into your camera's memory upon bootup (either manually or automatically). It provides additional functionality beyond that currently provided by the native camera firmware.

CHDK is not a permanent firmware upgrade: you decide how it is loaded (manually or automatically) and you can always easily remove it.

Please see the FAQ and the Firmware Usage page, as well as other pages on this wiki, for more specifics on supported cameras, details of features, scripting, downloading, etc.

TimeLife.ca - Classic Soft Rock Collection - Soft Rock Music

Yeah call me a sucker. I caught myself watching, and singing along with one of those late night 30 min infomercials for this collection. Air Supply was the host (ugh) But after humming along with every song they showcased, they had those faux-testimonials from what looked like the last of the  40 something boomers, (oh ugh, that's me!) talking about how long it would take to assemble a collection like from various different CD's (read: download), how great they sounded, and the clincher for me, how they don't play these songs on the radio anymore. That was so true. Even CFRW doesn't seem to play the right mix of old tunes and hey that's AM. (ugh yet again!)

So I bought it. A great mix of tracks (hit the link to read all of them) and they sound great. For example, I had never heard Gerry Raffery's Baker Street on anything but an AM radio. That tune has depth! It's amazing.

People always cringe at the mention of some of these songs but as long as they reference them in comedies and commercial (the Air Supply Burger anyone?) they catch themselves humming along!

Hard to believe it was ten years ago! The concert was promoted very little, by chance we both saw the same commercial, once on TV otherwise I wouldn't have believed it! As I mention to Rob, Prince was already a legend then,.. and he is still on top of his game today! Great show!

The Redeye Complex
Ten years ago today, I saw one of the best live shows I've ever seen.

It was in Fargo on a Monday. The ticket doesn't tell you who cuz Prince was having some branding issues at the time.

A side note story to this day was that while Ian, B, and I were waiting for the show to begin, Ian goes schmoozing with some people he recognizes in the crowd. The story goes that those people phoned him that day at work and was told that he "went to see Prince in Fargo tonight." "Prince is playing tonight!" was the reply and the client drove down as soon as they heard that.

Isn't that the what happened Ian? hehheheh It's a good story anyway.

(I found my ticket just a couple days ago while looking for some computer parts. That's gotta go on the blog. What a coincidence.)

LA Weekly: Evel Knievel and a Shit Named Joe Eszterhas - Peter Relic

For all those who had an Evel Knievel doll, Check this out!... The first paragraph of the story puts his fame in perspective of the 70's:

For kids growing up in the 1970s, Evel Knievel was a superhero. This had less to do with his real-life motorcycle jumps of double-decker buses, blustery canyons and casino fountains (which frequently ended in bone-breaking botch jobs and bailouts) than it did with mass-marketed merchandise. Thanks to action figures and comic books, Knievel existed in a mythic realm alongside the likes of Ghost Rider and Muhammad Ali. Best of all the Evel toys was a stunt cycle, which, thanks to its mega power launcher (basically a plastic hand crank), once cleared the slimy creek near our home — our housing development’s equivalent of the Grand Canyon.

In LA Weekly, Peter Relic writes about his attempt to profile Evel Knievel for Rolling Stone earlier this year.

From the other end of the phone came a sigh: “Peter, I don’t want or need Rolling Stone to do a story on me after all these years. In 1974 Rolling Stone sent a shit named Joe Eszterhas to write a story about me when I attempted to make my Snake River Canyon jump. And when the story came out, the title of the story was "King of the Goons." It hurt, it hurt very much, and I know a thing or two about pain. Now, I’m not judging your insides by the cover of your magazine. I’m sure you’re a decent human being. And God knows we all make mistakes. [Pause.] I made some of my biggest live on national television. But Rolling Stone made a mistake when they ran that story.”

The coolest new app in Leopard: The Finder!

Seems the coolest thing about upgrading to Leopard has been the new cover flow feature in the Finder. People are asking,"what application is this?!" They are generally surprised to hear it's not an app it's the OS!

It's been great because while shooting into the laptop, the load times are very fast and it saves having to run a separate app to display them. My only request is the ability to change the "add to iPhoto" button to Aperture.

Justice - D.A.N.C.E (Version Finale)

Justice's album is in my top roatation. It's as close to a new Daft Punk album as we'll get. The video is cool and plays off the many low fi T shirt designs you see on the net.
