David Pogue on the iMovie outrage.

Apple Takes a Step Back With iMovie ’08Last week, Apple released a new version of its iLife suite—its $80 package containing iPhoto, iMovie, iWeb and GarageBand. The suite also comes preinstalled on every new Mac.The enhancements in iPhoto, iWeb and GarageBand are great.
But iMovie ‘08 is an utter bafflement. Most people are used to a product cycle that goes like this: Release a new version every year or two, each more capable than the last. Ensure that it’s backward-compatible with your existing documents.

IMovie ‘08, on the other hand, has been totally misnamed. It’s not iMovie at all. In fact, it’s nothing like its predecessor and contains none of the same code or design. It’s designed for an utterly different task, and a lot of people are screaming bloody murder.

SHAW home internet, NOT any old port in the storm.

This week Shaw in Winnipeg closed off port 25. What does that mean? It means if you use any mail address and program OTHER than the one Shaw provides you, you won't be able to send email. Get in to your outgoing mail server and change the port from 25 to 587.

I mention this here in hopes to save someone else from a 45 min call to tech support with the end result being that it's Apple's fault. I should have googled the problem in the first place, I found the solution in about 10 mins of searching.

Shaw did this presumably to stem the flow of spam and mass mailers. They didn't tell anyone, not even their tech support phone staff! Feel secure.

The Hills Have Eyes

Dbenson, a shooter on the WPGphoto board, spotted us shooting the outerwear for Ricki's down at the Forks. This is a huge crop from a wide frame but you get the idea of the set up. I put some of the people standing around to work,by gettng them to hold reflectors and diffusors. It was for an outerwear campaign to run in the fall.

We had all sorts of people come up and ask questions, like where do you buy those "photo things", how much is your camera worth, etc. At one point we had some 20-something girls who asked if we were "like, taking" photography. We didn't understand at first, then it dawned on us, they thought we were in school! No, we replied, we do this for real, like, as a LIVING. "Wow, that would be, like sooooo cool to do that!" they said as they walked away, spooning their slurpees.

New tech? It's 18 months since it's release, but the Oly's won't trust it!

Vista, wireless sidelined from core Olympic IT roster

The Olympic Games require mature, stable technologies, said Yang Yuanqing, chairman of Lenovo, during a briefing in Beijing. The Olympic Games aren't a place to try new technologies because of the size and importance of the event, he said. Everything must work smoothly.

"If it's not stable, it could have some problems," he said.

That's why all the Olympic Games' vital PC-related tasks, including games management systems, results systems, commentator information systems, and staff and scheduling systems, will run on XP.

Tom Waits on Fernwood Tonight

This week's blast from the past. Fenwood Tonight was a parody talk show. Tom Waits does a version of The Piano Has Been Drinking, and plays it up.

A 60 minutes piece you need to see.

Darfur Villiage Being Burned
It hardly seems possible, but after four years, the genocide in Darfur continues. Correspondent Scott Pelley first reported this story last year, as the government in Sudan launched a new offensive of "ethnic cleansing."

You heard it here first...

Ok I am going out on a limb here, my prediction... after seeing the
trailer ( http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1809761737/video/3631941/)

Be Kind Rewind is going to be the following:

Michel Gondry's break out film, he's a genius, and finally everyone
will realize it.

Its gonna be huge for Mos Def, who is going to be almost as good as
Jack Black, he was the best part of Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy
( ok I know that doesn't mean much but I thought it was a cute film)

It's going to be the comedy sensation of the holiday season. that, or
a really popular cult hit.

it's gonna spur a TON of homage-knock offs and kick Youtube up a notch

ok having said all that, see the trailer and then see if you agree
with me.

Human camera

think of this guy next time you can't remember where you put the car keys! Amazing to watch, I urge you to see this.

MPI magazine cover

Contents July 2007

Quite often you work and work and work on an image to make it fit the cover of a magzine, only to find months later, they used a secondary shot you didn't work as hard at. I dont't know which one is better, but I certainly would have burnt down the edges on this one if I knew they were gonna try and float type on it. In fact I would have done a better job at converting this to B&W, I provided it in colour. Oh well. This one another rushy job, where we didn't get enough time to follow up a shoot with a proper edit and delivery on final images. Happens far too often these days.

Why I'd never buy a Leica!

Victoria Beckham used a Leica Digilux 2 digital camera to turn the tables on the paparazzi while out shopping during Milan Fashion Week. There was just one tiny problem for the wife of the England football captain. She inadvertently provided a perfect photo opportunity for the press snappers by leaving her lens cap on.
