Globe and mail article outrage

I see by the front page of today's Free Press, I wasn't the only one who was upset by that article about Winnipeg in the Globe and Mail.

The Globe and Mail - Seen & Heard

Can't say I was a fan of the article in the weekend Globe and mail. The article was like a typical visit from Toronto, It managed to gloss over the issues, present the stereotypes and not really explain much about what is trying to be done to revitalize the area. The link is to the audiovisual version of the arycile which doesn't offer much more insight. Very disappointing but not surprising from TO-centric G&M, a rare occasion they actually notice us and this is it?

Mac Attack a Load of Crap

This commentary takes to task the so-called viruses that are aimed at the Macintosh. Keeping it in perspective, under control,... everyone remain calm

Trend Watch!

Forget those little dogs people like Paris Hilton tote everywhere. All the kids in Paris will be sporting bunny rabbits this spring! Julie Pedersen showed up with Holiday her pet bunny, comfy in her little carry all.

As well Kevvy stopped by to model the latest in bluetooth-enabled-ipod-compatible snow boarding jackets from Burton. You can control the tunes on the sleeve, the speakers in the collar crank out, and when you're phone rings, it pauses the tracks and you can talk on the phone from your jacket!! "Waay cool braah! Which way to the double black diamond? What? I can't hear you, my jacket is too loud, I thought you said "look ouut for the cliff" aaaaaaaaaaahhh!!!!......"

Hilarious House site

I stumbled upon this show on the Drive Inn Channel while feeding Liam one Sunday morning. Gawd I loved this show! Cool site, lots of stuff.

Geeky post: Portable wireless router

People are amazed at how the low rez jpegs shoot into my laptop from my camera, wirelessly. Clients immediately get hooked on staring at the laptop screen while I shoot. For the most part I'd say 80% of the time, it works without a hitch.

Once in awhile, and it's always when you don't need it, the camera and laptop seem to stop speaking to each other. While I create a network on my iBook, the inherent quality of the wireless card/software is built on LOOKING for a network rather than serving one. So suddenly without warning we'll have two devices looking for a network, kinda like each of them saying " Well I thought YOU were serving the network!"

This little device servers up a network wirelessly D-Link's version of what Apple sells as the Airport Express, but a bit cheaper and smaller. It is about 2.5 inches square, and it runs off a USB port for power, so I plug it into a USB port on my laptop and presto, instant network.

You can also use it say to serve up wireless from a single highspeed connection, say, in a hotel. You can also use it to act a wireless adaptor for any device.

After Acquiring Macromedia, What's Next for Adobe? Ask Bruce Chizen - Knowledge@Wharton

Wortha read. The Adobe-Microsoft showdown is ramping up. I love this opening question and answer. No beating around the bush!

After Acquiring Macromedia, What's Next for Adobe? Ask Bruce Chizen - Knowledge@Wharton: "Knowledge@Wharton: How does it feel to have closed the acquisition of Macromedia?

Chizen: It's great. It is going even better than I had anticipated. And we went into it being realistic. Any kind of merger and acquisition activity is hard. But there have been no surprises -- which is shocking.

That doesn't mean there won't be!

Knowledge@Wharton: Let's start with the basic question: What was the primary motivation behind the acquisition of Macromedia?

Chizen: Flash.

Knowledge@Wharton: That simple?"

Acoustica - Alarm Will Sound

I broke down and bought this on iTunes. My first album purchased through there, I still feel like I should buy a CD, oh well my hang up to get over...

But what is it you ask? Well it's a 22 piece new music band doing an entire album of Aphex Twin covers. Yeah I know, I know, pretty obscure and obtuse sounding, but it IS very compelling music.

Bibble Ninija!

For those looking for a RAW processor AND some noise reduction, this combo could be the killer app!

Press Release: Austin, TX - Bibble Labs Inc has reached an agreement with PictureCode LLC, developer of the best-of-breed Noise Ninja image noise reduction software application. Forthcoming versions of Bibble Labs’ awardwinning RAW workflow software will feature fully integrated versions of Picturecode’s patent pending noise reduction technology. This will enable a new level of image quality in the raw workflow, especially for high-ISO images.

“As pioneers of DSLR RAW software we have led the way in speed, feature set, and cross platform support. With the inclusion of PictureCode’s Noise Ninja™ technology, we are again raising the bar for integrated, fast workflow,” states Eric Hyman, President & CEO of Bibble Labs.

Raw conversion yields the highest image quality possible from today’s professional level cameras. Nonetheless, it can magnify and enhance grain like noise that is inherent in all digital photographs, especially at high ISO sensitivities. By integrating PictureCode’s sophisticated noise reduction technology into the earliest stages of the raw conversion pipeline, noise can better be eliminated then ever before, yielding cleaner, smoother images.

“We’re excited to see our award winning noise reduction algorithms integrated into the Bibble RAW engine. The resulting image quality within a high speed raw workflow is a first for the industry,” says Jim Christian, founder of PictureCode.

Burns Auto Parts — Consultants

You photogs who don't have any of your work online, what the excuse? This article is worth reading on how to design your website. I certainly don't think mine is perfect or complete, but I have tried to keep it simple. No bells and whistles to make it easy to load and read.

Burns Auto Parts — Consultants: "In January, 2005, I surveyed art buyers from advertising agencies across the US about their thoughts when it comes to photographers’ websites—what they liked, disliked, and if they thought it was vital for a photographer to have a good website. The results were clear: when asked “How important is it for you, as a photo buyer, for a photographer to have a website where you can see her/his work?” 87% of respondents answered the question “very” or “most important.” Not a single respondent said it was “not important.”"

Symantec Security Response - OSX.Leap.A

OHMAGAWD!!! A real live Mac OS X virus!

Now hold on, before you freak out, look at the Symantec site explaining how it works.

It spreads via iChat, which hardly anyone I KNOW uses! So you have run that program and then hit YES to recieve the file into your machine. From who it doesn't say...

But then you'll actaully have to doubleclick on the file and let it expand! THEN you have to doubleclick the file to open it and start the virus!

So several steps along the way, you have to agree to all this to happen. Even Symantec doesn't warrant this virus as a huge concern!

The other shot was in a show home. We shot it with intention of replacing the yard and the next home inthe window. I grabbed a sunset and threw it in there.

Gorgol Bordello

Snaps from Friday'ss gig at the West End. The focal point of all the energy was the singer Eugene Holtz. He is crazy ebergy! It made me think this must be what the Pogues were like when they burst onto the scene. I surprised myself by being drawn into the front row, one toe in the mosh pit! But their energy is infectious!

Buddha Machine

Follow the link to learn what it is. I ordered one, I couldn't resist. I love ambient music as fixtures. I remember reading an interview with ENO in Cream magazine back in 1980, wrapping my 12 yr old head around the concept of "music for airports".

Weidenbaum: Were you surprised that people have bought multiple Buddha Machines, or did you sort of have that in mind?

Virant: Very surprised. Our original "pressing" was 300 machines. And we though those would last us a year or more. But from the very beginning, people bought multiple copies. My very first customer was Brian Eno, who ordered six based on a prototype that I showed him at a dinner in Beijing. Then when I went to deliver the finished product, he actually took a few more than planned. Then my second customer was Thomas Fehlmann in Berlin, who bought nearly a dozen.

Software Yellows Neglected Digital Photos Over Time

February 8, 2006 | Issue 42•06

ROCHESTER, NY—Eastman Kodak released an imaging software package that yellows, fades, and even loses digital photos over time Monday. 'With the click of a mouse, Fotomatshop will make your digital photographs crease, develop fingerprint spots, and even stick together in their 'virtual shoebox,'' Kodak president Antonio Perez said. 'It even has motion-blur and redden-eye features.' The software takes a week to process 26 digital photos, and charges $9.95 per use."

Desaturated look

I've been playing with RAW processing settings to get this desaturated feel. You really have to play with the setting with ACR to get this.

Vashti Bunyan: Lookaftering

One of those cool stories you see written up in a few magazines, to the point where you you just HAVE to hear it.
Her first folk album in 70's uk was a cult classic. She then spent the next thrity years living her life, some of it with a band of gypsies, obivious of her cult status. Word of her first album being downloaded on the net sparked interest in all parties and now 35 years later, her second album arrives. It's like a time machine to that era. Load this one in with some Belle and Sebastian, Nick Drake and have an anglo-hippy-folk-party.

Flight 93

I foprgot I saw this trailer awhile back. What prompted ne to recall this was catching a few minutes of Bloody Sunday, Paul Greengrass's last film, on cable. I already raved about this film, it's so well done, you'd swear it's a documentary rather than a scripted drama. If that film is any indication, Flight 93 will be intense!
Also, to tie in with a previous post greengrass's entry on IMDB mentioned he is in pre-production on The Watchmen. Yes that graphic novel that I was just raving about. We'll see what comes about.
