Platon and Putin.

http://www.worldpressphoto.org/images/stories/videos/Interviews/index.php?

At the link, you can listen to each winner explain how their images were created. I enjoyed Platon's story about shooting Vladmir Putin.(it's in the 2008 category)
I haven't done anything as significant as a world leader's first ever formal portrait for a cover of a international magazine, but can certainly relate to the process of waiting and waiting. Some CEO's manage to create an environment around them that make you almost believe their Putin in terms of importance! While some would think Platon's shot is merely ok, the key is knowing he waiting for days and finally had mere minutes to make this shot. I found it hard to watch Platon while Putin was staring at me!

37signals Product Blog: Introducing the Backpack Journal

Think Twitter or Facebook for project management. With this feature, Backpack is getting even more useful for small businesses with maybe 2-8 staff.

Introducing the Backpack Journal
A few weeks ago we gave everyone a peek at in/out, our internal app for keeping track of who's doing what and what everyone's recently completed. We mentioned that we were considering building it into Backpack.

Today we're pleased to announce that the Journal is now part of Backpack. Just log into your Backpack account and click the Journal tab.

The Journal is available on all plans -- from free to Max.The Journal eliminates the need to constantly ask each other "What are you working on right now?" and "What did you do today?"

The Alliance for Universal Power Supplies

Here's a cause I could get behind! Since our move a year ago, I have misplaced a few AC adapters. Now that I have located some, I have no idea which goes where. (A labeler would help BTW!)Also when traveling with work I have to lug a few different adapters. We can only hope a standard would emerge one day.
AUPS is an organization that supports and will set industry-wide standards for the development and adoption of universal power supplies. AUPS promotes and develops timely, relevant, standards for the power supply industry, ensuring interoperability and encouraging innovation and market growth.

I impressed Mr Taylor with my knowledge of Bollywood movies and music composers, prompting him to ask "So what IS your background, anyway?" He was amused that a 5th generation Canadian white guy was so into Indian Culture.

Dropping off E waste from the old days

Just the other day someone asked how I was able to snag ian.ca as a domain. I started my story with "I was on the net before the Web..." part way through someone asked "What do you mean by that?" I had to explain the net BW (Before the Web) to someone who's never known it any other way. CLUI and dial up seems so quaint now. Even the gear seems so primitive in design. Case in point,...

Yes that IS a Supra 14,4 modem I am holding. I am doing some spring cleaning and I have a lot of old stuff I am getting rid of. I still have lots of ADB, and SCSI devices and cabling. A ton of phone cables, as you used to get one with every computer or modem you bought> And of course a couple beige G3's including the FrankenMac, the G3 I manages to coble together and run Yellow Dog Linux on!

All of it is getting loaded up and taken to Computers for Schools over on Wyatt Road. The Prov is funding the Ewaste depots again, so get rid of all that old tech. Lets be real, you are never gonna use a SCSI device again!

RSS feeds as a Newspaper

If you still can't wrap your head around RSS feeds, maybe the newspaper metaphor will help.

Acrylic | Times
Instead of treating news like email (as most RSS readers do), Times presents you with headlines and photos from a variety of sources all in one place, letting you more easily discover the news you want to read. Like your own personal newspaper, you can put feeds into separate areas, create pages for different subjects, and more.

2008 Signature Awards

2008 Signature Awards
The awards are tonight. While several projects I have been involved in are up for awards, such as best Annual Report (HSC Foundation)or Best Outdoor Series (Warehouse One), the one I am most anxious about is for Best Direct Mail. My last promo, designed by the amazing team at Tetro Design, is up for Best Direct Mail. Between this nomination and the feedback I am getting from clients, it's great to know things are moving in the right direction. I've been very fortunate to have Tetro work with me on this project and I really hope they win!

The Home Theatre Quest

With the basement pretty much done, the search to build a home theatre starts now. As you can see by the pic, it can be rather daunting! Rob and Stan's advice is to start with the audio, it's less likely to be out of date by the time I'm done! With all the music I have I think that's a great idea.
There have been some advances of course, with the Mp3 and ipod's changing the way we interface with our music. But with audio you have to careful you don't get swept up into the audiophile vortex, a whirlwind of specs, adamant opinions and endless obscurity in terms of gear.

Dubai from the Burj, it's real.

Flickr Photo Download: Dubai from the Burj
You know the images that make the rounds in emails and eventually over two months you get a couple times from different people, this is one of those images.

You might have already received this one in your email.  Chase Jarvis posted it on his blog talking about Dubai, where he is at the moment.

The thing is, the minute people saw it they wanted to know if it's real or not. Some googling and triangulation by Chase's readership proved that it is indeed real. It's the Dubai skyline from the world's highest building. It's nice to know that with the increase in skeptical imagery, technology also allows ways to prove the validity of an image.

Montana Meth Project

Montana Meth Project
Crazy harsh anti-meth outdoor campaign from Montana. I can't even bring myself to post one of the pics, I can't imagine driving the wide open spaces of Montana and come across one of these as a superboard on the hwy. SFW but scarey, and thats the still, the TV spots are pretty intense too.

PDN had a story on their blog on one of them being pulled from the outdoor campaign because it went a bit too far. Anyone want to guess which one?
