Telstar Logistics: Frank Stoltesz

Departmentstore2Through the good offices of our distinguished associate Leif Peng, we recently discovered the remarkable illustrated oeuvre of Mr. Frank Soltesz. Steamship_2 During the late 1940s and early 1950s, Soltesz was commissioned by a company called Armstrong's Industrial Insulations to create a series of cutaway drawings about modern business. These were then published as advertisements in popular magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post.

New geek Term: WAF

The Woman Acceptance Factor (WAF) – sometimes referred to as Woman Approval Factor or Wife Acceptance Factor – is the playful estimation of the acceptance or refusal of a new acquisition by the significant other. It relies on the cliché that men are driven by a certain geekyness when it comes to acquisitions like home theater or PCs, disregarding the female aspects of aesthetics, design and practical/financial considerations. The first known WAF reference was in a 1989 article about wives rebellion against 'oversized loudspeakers'.The Woman Acceptance Factor is inversely proportional to the possible amount of conflict resulting from the different points of view. The lower the WAF, the more convincing needs to be done, or the more conflicts arises from the acquisition. A WAF of 0 means complete refusal, whereas a WAF of 1.0 equals unison acceptance.

I still like Mini's

Apple TV is certainly the talk of the town these days, but with its file format limitations and refurb Mac minis going for less than $500, it's worth considering the alternatives. Ever since its introduction, home theater buffs have been trying to squeeze a Mac mini between the receiver and the cable box to turn it into a multimedia jukebox (and—to a lesser extent—a PVR). But the key to this is an interface that allows you to access of this media from the carefully-crafted dent in your couch. And Apple seems to realize this, since every Mac mini now comes pre-installed with an IR remote and a 10' interface (an interface that can be used from 10' away, usually without a keyboard and mouse) in Front Row. But is Front Row really the best interface?

Tales of the Rat Fink

Tales ot the Rat Fink

I watched this just in time for Wolrd of Wheels this weekend. While the doc is ok, and a bit much at times, they do tell a great story with animations, stills and some cool cool cars. Ed Big Daddy Roth was the first guy who did graphic tees, before him t shirts were only white! Hard to believe eh? First guy to use fiberglass for a bidy, they banned his car cuz it was winning too much. And of course he wwas a visonary in terms of merchandising, the model kits the Tee shirts, everything.

The best part on the DVD is a home video of Roth and his old buddy Von Ducth handpainting a car in the 80's Pnstriping by hand is cool but Von Ducth did stylized lettering on the hood, backwards with no guides, all freehand! Woah!

my fave game for the PS2: Katamari Damacy

Katamari Damacy (塊魂 かたまり だましい?, Katamari Damashii) is a Japanese video game designed by Keita Takahashi and published by Namco. It was released for the Playstation 2 in North America on September 22, 2004. It is followed by three sequels, We ♥ Katamari, also for Playstation 2, Me & My Katamari, for the PlayStation Portable and the soon to be released in late 2007, Beautiful Katamari for the XBox 360, Playstation 3 and Wii.

The game's plot concerns a tiny prince on a mission to rebuild the stars, constellations and Moon, which his father has accidentally destroyed. This is achieved by rolling a magical, highly adhesive ball called a katamari around various locations, collecting increasingly larger objects, ranging from thumbtacks to schoolchildren to mountains, until the ball has grown large enough to become a star. The game falls under both the puzzle and action game genres, since strategy as well as dexterity are needed to complete a mission.

Katamari Damacy's story, characters, and settings are bizarre and heavily stylized, rarely attempting any semblance of realism, though the brands and items used are heavily based on those current in Japan during the game's production.

Maybe THIS is the digital Leica?!

Whoever provides all the attributes of an old Leica with a nice clean file will get all sorts of die hards ponying up the cash. Ricoh has been courting this crowd for many years, even with the high end film P&S. If anyone can win this high end customer, they can.

Cult of Mac on QTVR: What Happened?

WIRED Blogs: Cult of Mac

QuickTime VR hit in the mid-'90s, and it was strictly a novelty for a few years. It was good at rotating 3-D visuals of new Apple products, and that's about it. The technology got better and better over time, but Apple never found the killer app for the technology. It stayed with interior design tours and product glamour shots.

Stuff like the Airbus cabin is nice, but people spend hours on Google Earth, scouring the globe and leaving tags, and the visual quality is not as good as what Apple could do here if they wanted to. A lot of the time, I think that the death of Apple's R&D group was one of the most important steps in Apple's recovery. But there are times where I truly do mourn what was lost in the process. Apple is brilliant at finding new business models these days, but there was an era when they really pushed us forward on the technology front, not just on interface and platform.

QuickTime VR should have been a contender.

Pinhole cameras

A couple weeks ago, all the camera makers gathered in Las Vegas to strut their latest. Amidst the bright lights, big screens, buttons, and megapixels, it was easy to forget that photography can be a very simple art form.

There’s no better way to remind yourself than to make your own camera. Out of paper, a tin of mints, or a can of spam.

You won’t get optical image stabilization or face-tracking focusing when you make a pinhole camera, but you will get dreamy, surreal, and ghostly photographs from a camera you made with your very own hands. And, we hope, fresh perspective on a favorite hobby.

Heaven and Hell, The Mob Rules!

Tony Iommi onstageRonnie James Dio strikes a familiar pose

Well Sunday's night metal extravaganza was great fun! It was good to see several cliches within the genre are alive and well. Down the first opener, was er, a downer. Megadeth was the band the room was here to see. The young metalheads still follow them quite avidly. They had everyone up and giving 'er!

Then came Heaven& Hell which is Black Sabbath with Ronnoie James Dio singing. Metal from a different era,  the riffs were slower, and with a bit of groove, hinting at the blues roots. Some of the kid were bored but us old metal gusy were impressed. Ronnie James Dio proved why he was considered one of the best voices in metal. He still sounded great! They managed to hit all the numbers I wanted to hear with Neon Knights as the encore. A great show and it was fun to be a heavy metal fan for the day!

Captain Canuck is a perfect example! A Canadian comicbook hero, drawn here in Winnipeg, I have about 10 issues. The art near the end is SO much better than the first issue, it was really very cool! Capt.'s sidekicks, Red Coat and Kebec were Special RCMP agents! I had to google it and sure enuff there is an official webpage for Captain Canuck, read more about the history of this great comic here:

Kodak films falling off the radar

This reminds me of the time when I worked at Sam's and could recite the Kodak line of films based on the three letter designation. EPP, EPN, EPT, EPW, etc. Sounds like it's a WAY easier list to memorize, and getting easier all the time.

Hello, Kodak?

I noticed lately that a few films I was playing with were hard to find -- most specifically EPT (Ektachrome 160T) and EPJ (Ektachrome 320T) -- and dealers were mentioning that they thought it was discontinued. However, there wasn't an announcement on Kodak's site.

Finally, I called Kodak and asked them.Apparently EPJ has been out of production for over a year. And EPT has been out of production for some months now. I asked the guy on the phone why there wasn't an announcement about the film being discontinued. He told me to go to a URL on the kodak website and that there should be a notice there... and then confirmed that the website didn't contain a discontinuation notice, even though the film was out of production.

Then, I found out something I didn't even realize I needed to ask about.UltraColor 400, one of my favorite films, is only available from now on in 35mm format. I really love shooting UC400 in medium format and now I can't.We have reached a new stage with Kodak, and I'm not pleased about it. With prior film discontinuations, Kodak gave advanced warning that a film was going to be discontinued, perhaps with a suggested replacement film.
Now, we're faced with films being discontinued without the courtesy of advance warning so we can calibrate our process for a new film or alternatively stock up to complete a project while there's still film to be purchased.
With EPT and EPJ, there isn't any stock left in the warehouse to purchase.I am very disappointed in Kodak. Even accepting that film is no longer the cash-cow for Kodak, this is bad business.

Apple now one of the best retailers.

apple_store.03.jpg"Sorry Steve, Here's Why Apple Stores Won't Work," BusinessWeek wrote with great certainty in 2001. "It's desperation time in Cupertino, Calif.," opined TheStreet.com. "I give [Apple] two years before they're turning out the lights on a very painful and expensive mistake," predicted retail consultant David Goldstein.

Yet five years later, at 4:15 A.M., a light flickered on. Onlookers were bathed in the milky-white glow of the Apple logo, suspended in a freestanding cube of glass at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Central Park South in Manhattan. Dazzling in clarity and 32 feet on a side, the structure was likened variously to a temple, the Louvre Pyramid, Apple's G4 "Cube" computer, a giant button, and even - in the words of NBC's Brian Williams - Steve Jobs' Model T. But it was, everyone could agree, manifestly a store.

Obscure Hand-crafted Daguerrotype gear

Lest you think film in all it's flavours is gone, I offer a link to a guy in Ontario who makes handcrafted tools for use in the Dauerrotype process. The first widely used photographic process is still being pursed actively by all sorts of people. If technology has done one thing to these old processes, it's the sharing of info and techniques that's helped them continue.

Mike Robinson’s Century Darkroom in Toronto Canada has gained a reputation in several alternative photographic processes. Currently, Mike’s photography centers on the Daguerreotype. His work combines a classical sense of beauty with the high level of technical skill required for success in this difficult photographic medium.
