Jack Kirby Museum & Research Center

If there is a basis for my love of all things dark and moody in the visual arts, the work of Jack Kriby might be the origin. Heavy on the inks and strong squarish graphics, Kirby's work was one that I would follow what ever title he worked on.

Another MS Ride

As one of the close to 900 riders who participated in this weekend's 162 km round trip to Gimli, The Biking to the Viking, I help to raise a total of $450,000 to help in the fight against MS. We had pretty good weather both ways, a great team spirit and the ride was wonderfully supported as usual.

A very special thanks goes to all those who pledged money in support of my ride. I truly appreciate it, as do the many people who's lives are touched by MS.

I already have my sights set for next year's ride! My goal for next year is to enlist at least 2 more people for our team. It's just way more fun to ride with friends. If you ever wanted to try a ride of this length, I encourage you to start here. The volunteers and staff support riders incredibly well. All we had to do was pedal! So if you want to join our team, "Thighs Matter" next year let me know!

Thanks again and have a great day!

What do two twisted geniuses do for fun?

Aphex twin and Chris Cunnigham are two very brilliant but twisted
geniuses. They made a video called Rubber Johnny,... its just weird
and can creep you right out. Careful don't watch this a night like I
did!

Cunnigham, the video director is suppose to move to features soon.
When he does, it could be very creepy.

Brian Eno: Another Day On Earth

A sly album, it can get easily lost in the iPod. I choose to play the CD by itself in the Element, and like many of the reviews at the link suggest, it gets under your skin.

This one review seems to sum it up:

"In a pop world where everything feels amped up, who could have imagined that this once-chilly music could sound so comforting."

'Mayday! Mayday!' appeal from Cypriot jet two seconds before crash

OH this just creates a whole new bad sleep for me.

'Mayday! Mayday!' appeal from Cypriot jet two seconds before crash: "The report appears to confirm initial suspicions that people
aboard the Helios Airways plane were incapacitated by a loss of
cabin pressure early in the flight at about 34,000 feet and that
someone tried to save the flight shortly before it crashed.

On the day of the crash, two Greek air force F-16 fighter planes
were scrambled to intercept the flight shortly before the accident.

Pilots reported seeing the co-pilot slumped over the controls,
apparently unconscious, and the pilot not in his seat. On their
second pass by the airliner, the F-16 pilots saw two people in the
cockpit, apparently trying to take control of the plane.

According to the report issued Monday, a man wearing an oxygen
mask, believed to be 25-year-old flight attendant Andreas
Prodromou, tried to steer the plane for the last 10 minutes and
contact air-traffic control authorities.

In his first appeal, he cried ''Mayday!'' three times %u2014 but the
plane's communications had apparently been set to the wrong
frequency, Tsolakis said.

It remains unclear how the would-be rescuer stayed conscious.

The Helios flight from Larnaca, Cyprus, to Athens ran out of
fuel before crashing near the scenic village of Grammatiko, 25
miles north of Athens, the report said.

The plane crashed in Greece after circling for more than an hour
in a holding pattern above the Aegean Sea island of Kea, southeast
of Athens International Airport.

''There are indications of technical problems in the
pressurization system ... There is proof that the engines of the
plane stopped working because the fuel supply was exhausted, and
that this was the final cause of the crash,'' the two-page report
said."

Naughty James - The 1095 Project - July 04, 2005

I think back to when I was a young photog, how precious each frame of film was. You had to always think of how much every roll will cost to process. Now the youth create websites documenting every day of their lives, endless amounts of images being produced. Among the banal some art is surely to show up. The language of photography, with it's ties to our memory of cinema and reality shows, with it's closeted urges of voyeurism, is changing in a huge way.

There are lives, full formed that have only ever known digital photography, accessible as a cell phone. This guy is an example. He does a frame on the site for every day. Careful it's not always safe for work, but then again, I don't imagine being 20 something is safe these days.

Current Playlist

A playliston the iPod In the old days this would be a mix tape. I used to make these, spend a lot of time coming up with the right mix, imagine what it would be like for the intended listener to work their way through the tape. Nick Hornby had a good poke at this practise in High Fidelity. I imagine the art of the mix tape will be lost with the MP3 generation.

This is a smattering of what's currently in my iPod rotation. Though the Bjork tracks are not new I just added the last two albums to my ipod. Andy Patrridge is the lead singer sonwwriter for Xtc and his Fuzzy Warbles are a collection of demos from the entire span of his career. Aphex, Tom Waits, Bob Mould, Gary Numan, Krfatwerk, hell even Ozzy! All the nut balls are in there. If you can find a cassette recorder that I can plug this iMac into, you can have a mix of this.

The death of a mill

This the Olgivie Flour Mill's destruction. There is something about the collapse of ANY building, even if it's destruction is planned, that references 9/11.

Then again maybe it's just me, but that's for another rant.

On my Bookshelf: J.G. Ballard: Interviews

RE/Search Publications -- Features -- J.G. Ballard: Interviews : "Ballard's writing stripped the 20th century of its cultural illusions. Most science fiction authors conceal their mysticism beneath what H.G. Wells called 'an ingenious use of scientific patter.' Ballard does the opposite, smuggling the Enlightenment in under the cover of dreams. It doesn't matter how far or fast humanity travels, his stories say: even in space, the most alien creatures we'll confront are ourselves.'

For more than four decades Ballard has exerted a deep influence over diverse writers like Angela Carter, Jean Baudrillard, Michel Houellebecq, and Don DeLillo, in a career that climaxed with his Booker Prize-nominated 'Empire of the Sun' (filmed by Steven Spielberg--of all people---in 1987). . . With the new volume of interviews from RE/Search, we can finally see Ballard whole. He is revealed as a moralist, standing at the intersection between Jonathan Swift and Salvador Dali. "

Saw a video, stuck in my head, crazy mixed up beats and wild energy. Had to have it, finally picked it up. Hey I BOUGHT a CD, I still do that eh? I don't download everything.

Just playing it for the first time. Think Missy E in a world music, with Neneh Cherry from the old days, and you get close.

If anyone is interested, ask me sometime about my experience in Katimavik in 1984-85. It was one of those experiences that changed the way I see the world forever and enable me to become a photographer. I won't bore you with the details here, but I encourage any young person to seek out the options to volunteer in Canada or around the world. This link is for a movement to form a youth policy to make these opportunities more accessible.

Look for the upcoming issue of Winnipeg Life Magazine, featuring a fashion spread we just did at Ft Gibraltar. This will be the cover image. It truly was a team effort with the hair and makeup people, the models, the editorial staff, Jenna my assistant, all coming together to make it happen.
