Robert Frank The Americans

It's considered the most famous of photography books in the world. Everyone should see it. I bought it back on college when I wanted to be a photojournalist. At that time Frank pretty much gave up photography and wasn't seen much which added to the mythos. This is the 50th Ann reissue and apparently looks amazing, with all the images rescanned etc. It still maintains the Kerouac introduction and is one of the more compelling reasons I search out his writing. This book is going on my wish list if anyone wants to buy it for me :-)

Wassup 2008

I am spreading this one, cuz it's brilliant. Same cast, same premise, but 8 years later, everyone's ready for a change.

Poladroid project : the easiest and funniest Polaroid Image Maker

iPhone Apps

Its been awhile now with my iphone and yes it's indispensable!

Here are a few things I really like about my iphone

Mobile Me
The integration of the calendar, contacts and emails through MobileMe actually works as advertised. It's great to enter something in either my desktop, or phone and then later see it on the other device, with out consiously syncing. For someone like myself it's worth the price of admission for that alone.

Bloom
The ambient music generator by Brian Eno. Yes that Eno. You touch the screen to make random loops. Very relaxing and my son's favorite thing to play on the iPhone.

Camera Bag
a $2.99 app that process the images you take with the built in camera to simulate the effects of Holga, Lomo, colour film from 1974 and a few others. I just bought this so examples are forthcoming.

Air Me
AirMe-icon
A small app that replaces the camera interface and uplaods the images directly to Flickr. I have already talked about this one, its free and is nice

If you want to see your Flickr account and view your contacts images, then Exposure is the app to use, runs very quick. recently Flickr optimized a mobile version of their site specififcally for iphones and it works very well too!

TimmyMe
I pull this one out for fun. It will find the 5 closest Tim Hortons, you pick one and it will kick over to the GPS and show you how to get there. Yeah you could just use the GPS but that's not as much fun. They do a Strabucks ver of this app but you have to buy it. The cost is less that a Grande Latte.

Definitely gonna pre-order this one!

Portraits on White

Two different clients, two different applications. But both have people on white backgrounds.

These were shot slightly different, different angles, lenses and the Cancercare images are tweaked up for reproduction in newsprint.

In was in between these two jobs I was reading about reaction to Platon's appointment to The New Yorker Magazine.
The magazine used to use Avedon. So some of the reaction was that Platon wasn't a big stretch. Both have made careers shooting people in B&W on white backgrounds. Why couldn't they have found someone else?

Shooting people on white backgrounds is something I do a lot as well, but it's never boring. Shooting people on white is like playing blues or jazz. In blues or jazz you have the basic song structure, the basic changes, anenabling someone to explore things in their solos. In my case, the basic structure, the white background, is always the same, maybe a slight difference in lighting or angle, but what makes it different is the subject. Everyone has a different story to tell, reacts different to the camera, it's never the same way twice.
If you've shot a lot of portraits like this, you appreciate the subtle differences every photographer brings to this set up.
