U of M Annual Report wins award

Last year's University of Manitoba Annual Report, which I worked on, won Bronze at the CASE awards.

McKim Crinigan George issued a newsletter/press release describing the brief and their solution, which I excerpt here:

“Through the use of dramatic photography and the university brand’s diverse colour palette the annual report conveys the story of the university’s accolades in a striking way,” George adds. The winning season metaphor, inspired by the Bison Vanier Cup victory in 2007, conjures a compelling narrative that connect all of the U of M’s success stories with sections like, “Winning means: Breaking Through” for its research highlights, and “Winning is: Giving Yourself to Something Bigger” to introduce the donor pages.

You can read the whole press release from MCG here.

and you can see some of the images here. Others on my flickr photostream.

The last darkroom

a series of "portraits" of darkrooms in London. If you've ever spent countless hours in the dark making that one elusive print, you will love seeing this!

Recent work: Investorcare

Partnering with Shaun Green of Bio Design Works, we shot a series of 3 min video introductions for this new website, Investorcare.
It was shot on green screen in my studio, making it easy for Shaun to incorporate the clips in the web design.

Alexander Mickelthwate

Alexander Mickelthwate

portrait done in studio. It's all in the context though. Normally you'd say "hey nice shot, the guy looks pretty relaxed, good smile, slightly disheveled but cool."

Ah but if I told you this was Alexander Mickelthwate the musical director of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra?
Suddenly all that takes on a new meaning, it flies in the face of how a conductor should look!

Mickelthwate is incredibly energetic and passionate and it's very contagious! He loves to talk about music, and it shows! Great stuff!

Throw out the book on economics? Where do I start?

From a recent assignment. Prof of Economics at local university. I was sent with the brief "throwing out the book on economics" The editors had no idea what they were suggesting! It was an incredibly packed office. I need to get a smaller softbox for shoots like this!

The Wire

I canceled my subscription to Applied Arts this year, after almost 20 years! I took the money I usually spend on it and subscribed to The Wire. As Robert as said, reading it feels like you're entering a whole other world of music. I don't recognize much, but it all sounds so interesting. I plan to explore more of music's outer reaches.
