The Campfire Headphase- Boards of Canada
This is the soundtrack to my dreams. It's great gauzy and brilliant.
Impulsive! Revolutionary Jazz Reworked: Music: Various Artists
The best part was I decided to get this for $14.99 at Best Buy, then it scanned in at the till for $9.99! SCORE!
"Impulsive! is a collection of reworked songs from the esteemed catalog of Impulse! Records. Mining a generation of experimental, visionary DJs/producers, Impulsive! re-imagines legendary jazz tracks from composers like Charles Mingus, Dizzy Gillespie, Pharoah Sanders, Yusef Lateef and more. The music of Impulse! was a crucial component to the development of jazz music in the '60s and '70s, allowing its artists a home to work out their most creative ideas, and that spirit continues today with Impulsive!"

Tiga - Sexor
aww what the hell I bought it anyway!
Three years ago, Montreal DJ Tiga was perhaps the single hottest figure in the burgeoning electroclash scene, a cult star namechecked by everyone from Fischerspooner to, inevitably, Madonna. Had "Sexor" been released back then, its '80s synths, house beats and deadpan camp may well have sounded fresh and cutting edge. Unfortunately, the three indulgent years it took to make this record have seen dozens of rivals release records with similar influences, sometimes - as with Scissor Sisters and Goldfrapp - with more panache and heart.
A shame, because taken on its own merits, "Sexor" is one of the more diverting and consistent dance records of recent times, and certainly one of the most fun.

Framed & Exposed: A First Look at the Nikon Capture NX Beta
First looks at the beta are out and people are saying good things about software from Nikon! Could this be my rawworkflow workhorse? Cheaper than Aperture and I can run it on my machine!
"Previous versions of Nikon Capture were aimed primarily at higher end users who used it as a Raw converter (before passing the results on to Photoshop). Nikon NX is targeted at photographers of all skill levels -- from point-and-shooters to professional SLR users. No matter what brand of camera you shoot with, or whether you shoot Raw or JPEG (or even shoot film and scan into TIFF format), Nikon is hoping you'll use Capture NX for your editing. Unlike previous versions, the new program provides a complete non-destructive editing environment and boasts a simple, powerful editing interface unlike anything found in any other image editor."

New Winnipeg Forums - Winnipeg Exodus
Shel, its not all bad posts in this thread,.. check this out.
New Winnipeg Forums - Winnipeg Exodus: "It's not all exodus...
I married a Winnipeg girl - at the Fort Garry no less - and have come to love our visits 'back home'. My wife left for school and opportunities kept her in Toronto, where I'm from.
But things change and priorities change. We have the chance to get out of Toronto right now; we've decided to take it and will be moving in July.
It takes about ten seconds to get our Toronto friends on board with this move. Cost of living, a top notch arts scene, proximity of family, abundance of jobs, fresh air, prairie sky and a short list of very excellent 'Peg friends who never felt the need to bash their heads against Upper Canada, soon have them nodding and excusing themselves to go on mls.
We'll be living a short walk from a couple of beautiful parks, a decent coffee and a whack of great little shops. There's a world class wine shop less than 5 minutes from our place and a glut of grocery stores.
Added to all this is the equity we're bringing with us from killing ourselves in the Toronto real estate market and a pretty decent real, tangible, quality of life argument writes itself.
But we're super lucky... Not many people get to have a second chance in a new town once they've rushed into their 'adult life' after school, when debt and responsibility have them cornered.
Anyway, I don't think we're freaks or anything. I bet there are a few people trolling this board right now asking themselves the hard questions about what they want for themselves and their families. Asking themselves if 14 hour work days to pay for ridiculous mortgages and child care is what they had in mind when they signed up for the big city thing.
Not to mention the fact that we had dozens of 'don't go outside if you can avoid it because the air isn't good for you days' last Summer. Nothing says good living like a respirator! I mean seriously, is childhood asthma a fair trade for my career aspirations?
From where I stand the tide is turning and, again, I bet that more than a few big city 'Peggers and - their spouses - will be seriously considering returning.
Heck, I think some of our died-in-the-wool Hogtowner friends might be following us...

The Rasterbator
make cool pop art posters! This is cool!
The Sect of Homokaasu - The Rasterbator: "The Rasterbator is a web service which creates huge, rasterized images from any picture. The rasterized images can be printed and assembled into extremely cool looking posters up to 20 meters in size.

Download a camera
a PDF of a camera you print out, cut and assemble. You use a pin hole to make an image. This was the first photo assignment I ever had, make a pinhole camera. It looked nothing like this though!

The Rise and Sprawl
This quote sums it up:
"Instead of wondering why the young abandon Winnipeg, perhaps we should start asking why Winnipeg has abandoned it's young."
"Instead of wondering why the young abandon Winnipeg, perhaps we should start asking why Winnipeg has abandoned it's young."
The Rise and Sprawl
Recent evenst and articles in the Freep have been getting me charged up about the vision or lack of it, towards the future of this city. I have posted this link before, but worth a revisit. Catch Dallas Hansen in the edit pages of Saturday Freep for more dialogue.
The Rise and Sprawl: "Wpg grinds you down - you grow tired of crappy transit, limited recreational opportunities, and the lack of amenities in the inner-city. You begin to imagine a world more civilized, the kind of place where you don't get the finger for riding a bicycle. A place with people on the streets, and endless variety of shops and services. The kind of place your 'cool' freinds have long since left the for. Wpg certainly has a progressive subculture... unfortunately you're the minority...
Anyone passionate about Wpg develops a love hate relationship with the city. Love for what Wpg used to be, and what it could be in the future. Hate for wasted potential and the mediocre vibe that permeates.
There's amazing architecture, beautiful inner-city neighborhoods, and a tolerant, earthiness about the population... Sadly however, Wpg has for the most part become a sprawling, empty, depressing place. There are pockets of street life, but they are few and far between. It's a great place to drive, and you're never far from easy parking, but well, who cares.' "

Burt Bacharach The Look of Love
For me, the best moment of the American Idol final (A guilty pleasure, sorry!) last night was the Burt Bacharach tribute with Dionne Warrick showing up. If you don't know Bacharach by name, you know his tunes. They are ingrained into the pop subconcious, they name movies with his song titles, they cover his songs in commercials. A hundred years from now they will still be sining his songs. So it made me pull out this collection, always a crowd pleasing fave at the studio. Everyone responds when I play this, as we all grew up with these songs. "My dad used to play this song all the time!" You may call this song collection cheesy, but careful, you will find yourself singing along
Which reminds me of Bruce's post about Herb Albert, Bacharach's buddy. One of the songs on this collection is by Herb Albert, singing!

YIP-eeee!
I was at this event. It's so inspiring to see teenagers doing some good and also be so creative and having fun! Some of the videos were hillarious as were the spoken word and puppet shows. Kids are cool.
The Winnipeg Foundation: What's New: "On May 18th, more than 300 students from 20 Winnipeg high schools, their teacher advisors, grant recipients and special guests all celebrated the completion of the seventh year of The Winnipeg Foundation's Youth in Philanthropy (YiP) program. The students made 134 grants totalling more than $100,000 to a wide variety of local charities.
The 'YiPolympics' event included 20 creative presentations by the student committees – ranging from poetry and songs to puppet shows and videos – each celebrating the students’ experiences with YiP."

A Hangar, A Pinhole And A World Record: Building The World's Biggest Camera
Woah this is impressive if it works!
A Hangar, A Pinhole And A World Record: Building The World's Biggest Camera: "The Great Picture, as the group calls it, will measure 25 feet by 100 feet. The hangar that will become their camera obscura is 160 feet long and 60 feet high, and the photographers will hang the cloth at a focal length of 80 feet from the pinhole, Burchfield says.
Incidentally, 'pinhole' is an imprecise word; the hole will probably need to be a quarter-inch or more in diameter. Burchfield says the team is conducting experiments with different aperture sizes and exposure times.
Most likely, the photo will need to be exposed for five to 12 days, Burchfield says, depending on the results of their experiments."

Arstechnica Aperture 1.1 review
Well now I want to try this out! The review is worth a read.
as it stands, Aperture can now genuinely claim to be among the better RAW converters and when you combine that with the serious workflow benefits the program offers with its now-cheaper price tag, you have a serious professional photography companion as well as a tempting upgrade for iPhoto users. Apple's managed to pull an about-face on many levels here and I'm happy they did—my flame-retardant suit was starting to give.

Delicious Monster
One of the coolest programs you can get for your Mac, is Library from Delicious Monster. You simply hold up your CD DVD, Book or video game to a video or web camera attached to you Mac and you can build a very cool library of all your "stuff". As you can see in the screen shot it reads the bar code and then loads all the info from Amazon. As well, you can create profiles of people who have your stuff on loan to you can keep track of it all. VERY cool, this program always gets awards at Macworld and I can see why!

Safety Happens
If you've seen these recent commercials for the safter features in the new VW Jetta's chances are you won't forget them. The link is to one of two of them on youTube. Very unsettling to watch, someone people are complaining about them. I can see if you've had someone clsoe to you involved in a similar accident, how these spots would freak you out.

United 93
Finally saw it last night. Funny how so many seemingly mundane images hold so much more weight in the post 9/11 world. Three scenes of the many that stand out for me:
-The collective jaw dropping silence as everyone on the ground witnesses the second plane hit the tower. the airtraffic controllers, the NORAD people, the FAA, all of them in positions where KNOWING what's going on is their job, registering the fear of the unknown.
-The head guy at the FAA ordering all air traffic grounded. When his underlings mention the accoicated costs in the order of billions this order will cost, he points to the screen and yells "We are at war with SOMEONE!" The enemy at the time, a mystery.
-The final rush to the cockpit. Messy, desperate and void of any Hollywood bluster, these final scenes really ring true to life.

phantompalooza 2 - phoenix sings Old Souls
This clip gives you an idea of the frenzy when Jessica Harper sang Paul Williams'song Old Souls. What you don't see is the numerous people with tears in their eyes, Paul Williams included! This song was the hi-light of the event for me and many others.
