Another Folk Fest
Another Folk Fest has come and gone. Here are a few musings on the event.
Didn't take many pics. The few I did take are lost on my Eye Fi card that died :-( Though plenty of people, artists included were taking them.(see Rob's post here) Jeope has some cool snaps too!
It has taken a great heap of fortitude to realize that I don't need to photograph an experience to legitimize it. Something about living in the now, and putting the camera down to enjoy it. For me this is HUGE. Folk fest is a great opportunity to practice that act.
I am giving up on convincing friends who haven't attended to come and try it out. In fact I'd prefer if you DIDN'T come. More people mean more Volkswagen promotions on stage and in the middle of the field, more sponsorship junk all over the place, and if you saw the proposed plans for the site, a much more commercial festival. An old folkie was spitting nails and practically threw her ice cream at the architect drawings. It will be a radical re-think of the site layout, with the food vendor and handmade village taking a bigger role. Lil Shopping mall on the Prairie.
The spontaneous creation of amazing music by a bunch of people who just met, will always, ALWAYS keep me in awe. With nothing more that "This one's in G fella's" amazing stuff will happen. For this reason alone, no matter how hard I will try, musicians will always be cooler that photographers :-)
While eating alone, a shirtless 27 yr old tree planter came and joined me, and for about half an hour we chatted. He was "on the Road" and I was waxing philosophically about the festival, Winnipeg, and what I would do if I was 27 again. It was a great Folk fest moment
Rain, when it happens ALL day, sucks, no matter how much fun the Family Tent is.

Awww, yer so jaded.
I keed of course. Annoying as his accordion was, Geoff Berner's cut-short tweener set was definitely a highlight. When he said Volkswagen endorsed his song about Hitler, I almost lost it. Hilarious.
I was quite appalled by the food village 'upgrade'
When the money can be placed in the music *cough* ben harper please .... ;)
I have only been attending three years so I cant really say 'how it was' But god dahm VW, why not have a bike sponser, i really needed a bike at campground ;P
