More Flickr Flack

I received an email a few days ago from an Associate editor for an education magazine based in California. He explained who he was, then preceded gush about the images of Liam playing with the XO Laptop. They were doing a story on it and need some great art and the one shot fit the bill, perfectly!

It took me a few minutes, after re-reading the email, to realize that the mention of any kind of compensation was missing in his email. So I asked about the rate he was willing to pay. In his reply, they suddenly found another shot, thanks anyway. A publication in California, paid subscription base, advertisers, in market the size of Canada, wanting photos for free.

As I mentioned in my interview on the GDC newsletter, people of all profession seem to confuse the difference between publicly viewable and public ownership. As much as I find watermarks in images annoying, I am going to have to start adding them to my Flickr images.

This morning's new piece about the local video and music store being busted for copyright theft shows some glimmer of hope about the public's perception of copyright on creative work.

Come on man! You could've had your images printed in a huge magazine - and maybe would've had a photo credit ! Are you insane? What's wrong with you? Are you TRYING TO MAKE A LIVING FROM PHOTOGRAPHY???? You've certainly got some nerve!
